Hacking Preparing for possible brick

I don't even know why people bother with channels for every last bit of homebrew around. With the high risk of a full brick due to the still highly undocumented nature of the channel banner system, not to mention wasting precious NAND space for stuff that will work just the same off an SD card with just a few added seconds and button clicks (oh noes! I have to load HBC first and then boot the application! My fingers are going to be sore!).

Channels do nothing more than add a touch of eye candy. Nothing more. If that's your thing and you want to risk it, I won't stop you. I just think the whole aspect of people creating dozens of channels for just about everything is silly. Not to mention the lack of testing on said channels and the obliviousness of uploading those wad files with no error protection whatsoever (zip your damn wads FIRST before it's uploaded. christ.)

And with the advent of the 3.4 update (and possibly future updates) and the way the Twiizer team wants to go, channels outside of legitimately downloaded Nintendo channels from the shop are going to be a memory.

Uploading of files should follow a set of guide lines. Using compression is a HUGE MUST imho. If you don't even a good wad can brick you. There are MANY other things to do with the testing that we don't see sometimes and it makes me cringe tbo.

I'm not saying uploading wads is bad, but no site that deal with uploading of files on a daily basis would have such lax code of conduct especialy when it could damage equipment worth hundreds of £$.

This is on topic, because you can prepare by not taking unnecessary risks.

As for chans vs apps in HBC, well I like the idea of apps in HBC, but for my kids they like chans, they dont like scrolling through 25 pages of my test crap

each to there own.

remember...banner brick with no starfall means chip is required.

no chip? should have been on 3.2 + Starfall + Tp-hack
no exceptions.
well said, how many times have you said the same old thing Noob, aren't you fed up?

sometimes it's frustrating, but this guy is at least asking ahead of time.

plus...you wouldn't have liked it if I had given up when I was explaining it to you, would ya buddy? :-)

For those of you who think this is a dumb idea on my part, they're game WADs, not eyecandy HBC conversions.

So anyway, as well as you guys had put it, I'm still a little bit confuzzled. Would simply using the WadManager + Twilight Hack fix a banner brick, or do I HAVE to use Starfall? And do I need anything extra with Starfall, like a specific IOS?

Ive never had to do this but as far as I know this is right:

A: I dont think any of us think you are dumb. In fact most of us think more highly of you simply for taking these preventative measures (if only more people did this!) Wad manager + twilight hack alone will not fix your banner brick, because you cannot run TP if you are bricked. (Unless I am very mistaken)

However - With starfall installed, you can autoboot ANY retail game, which will allow you to use TP to load your wad manager and uninstall the wad.

Im sure I will be corrected if I am wrong.

Alright, so how would I install Starfall? Sorry if I'm asking too many questions, but I just got outta the PSP hacking scene and the Wii hacking scene is kinda different.

My just-thought-of good way to recover from banner brick:

1. Install HBC, cIOS and Starfall, keep Twilight Hack on Wii's memory
2. Somehow banner brick or something
3. Boot into Twilight Hack and run Waninkoko's Channel Loader's boot.dol off of root of SD
4. Load Homebrew Channel

lol. just download it then follow the instructions it gives you. it's not hard to install

Thats so crazy it just might work!

Im going to go banner brick and check!

If it doesn't, just replace the SD:/boot.dol with the Wad Manager.
Then remove the conflicting wad.

Even though I know you're not going to try it.

And instead of installing cIOS and using the Channel Loader, you could also use WiiMU.

I used the instructions "here" to make the Wadmanager disc as well as an Any Title Deleter disc. With this I can remove anything on the system without need of having a boot.dol on the SD
Yeah but you'll need a modchip for this. I was under the impression xtalarge hasn't got one.

I read somewhere that with 3.2 e/u and starfall with the last 3 items enabled a chip was not needed. All that was needed is a GC controller and Start rescue-menu you use this to load zelda and run the tp hack and you can then lauch some homebrew eg wad manager or any title deleter if you want to remove a bad channel

SO yes for the Disc I made you need a chip but without one you can still use the TP hack and an SD with AnyTitleDeleter or Wadmanager at the root
