Felonies are super common, admittedly I never worked at McDonald's but can confirm 100% there were felons at Sonic and KFC
It's a very low paying job and it tends to attract people who can't work anywhere else (aka felons)
I would be shocked if most local McDonald's didn't have a few people with felony convictions since it's like 1/12 people
Edit: not totally related but also, there were undocumented people working there too

In Canada, there are prisons (simply called prisons) that are for minor crimes, and we have penitentiary, which are for major and/or violent criminals.
We usually consider a "major crime" when the criminal is sentenced to over 2 years of incarceration.
