My mother raised me to never give money to homeless people. 99% of time, they are homeless either because of mental trouble or because of an addiction (drug, gambling, alcohol, etc.). I'm not gonna give money to someone who can't manage it well. She taught me to give them something else (like some fresh food, or a lemonade during warm days). When a homeless person asks me "1$ for a coffee", I'll instead ask them "What do you want in your coffee" and I'll buy them one myself.

You made me remember a time when my father and a 8 old years me was on the porch of the house and some young fellow passing, asking my father money because «he was hungry». my father told to that guy «I have not money but the back yard can use a mow, if you mow the back yard ( very small: 100 square feet ) I will give you lunch and a tupper with diner and a breakfast. I have tools.

That guy get SO MAD I didn't understand and even replied: «I am asking for money no for work» and leave screaming bad words.

That's usually a sign that they aren't actual homeless. If they are picky like that, they are either :
1- not really homeless
or 2- have heavy mental issue, you should get away from them

I remember one who asked me a dollar for a coffee, there was a Tim Horton nearby (on the other side of the parking where we were), so I told him "what do you want in your coffee, we will get you one"
He said that he wanted a dollar and nother else from me. So I said "well, nothing it is then" and I walked away.

I remember another one who asked me "20$ for a brick of milk" like, wtf?
