Hacking Possible to region change Wii Mini?

I have a PAL Wii Mini and would like to convert it to NTSC-US. I already tried installing the normal 4.3U System Menu (non mini Wii) and ended up with a semi-brick. I had the SD card icon displayed but could not access the setting (opera brick) and output was still PAL and NTSC discs did not work. I restored to the Wii Mini System Menu 4.3E and eveything is normal now. If I were to do it again, will I need to mess with sysconf to not end up with a semi-brick?
