Considering my questionable health and immune system, I don't plan on risking anything by jumping into a dumpster. This has pretty much always been my mentality on the idea of dumpster diving. I also wanted to include that I am terrified of maggots. So the idea of putting myself into a situation where I am surrounded by them would be living out one of my worst nightmares.

Yeah, my school had some old computers strapped to pallets, and I got permission to take home anything I wanted before he shrink-wrapped them for the recycling center. But that was high school... I'm 37 now. That's as close to "dumpster diving" as I've ever gone. I'm not a poor freeloader looking for free stuff anymore though.

Me and some friends from work wanted to go diving at petstores cause alot of time they would throw out good equipment, like new aquariums or reptile tanks or aquarium decorations, We never did.

One of my coworkers told us he used to work at a petstore and that they would never let the employees take anything they would throw out, so he used to call his brother when he had to throw stuff out to come pick them up. He also told tell me that so many people would go diving for any dry dog or cat food that has been thrown out.

He said he had to slash the bags and empty them out in the dumpster to stop people, but it didn't stop them from doing it. Alot of the times he said it was expired food or food that was contaminated and needed to be thrown out. They would tell people but they didn't care. Apparently 1 guy came and filled over 15 large garbage bag full of this dog food.
So they had to start locking their dumpster after.

Another friend of mine who worked at a wholesale store said they found a 27 year old guy that OD in their dumpster a couple of years ago.

During the making of this video, each member of the band was asked what their greatest fear of dying would be, and they enacted them in this video. So just knowing that they "conquered" their fears in this video has me giving them mad props. It's also been viewed almost 300 million times, so that's dope.

Is rummaging through the flea market or garage sales not similar enough? Before the pandemic I did actually enjoy doing that from time to time, looking for old gaming, sports, or music memorabilia.

Straight-up sorting through piles of wet, sticky, and/or dirty garbage though? No thanks.

That's actually a pretty awesome story and I give them mad props as well. For me, this is one of those fears that's rooted in a few other issues involving my anxiety around my health. A less deep-dive into my mind, it's a fear of rot and what possible bacteria might be present that could affect my health. Chances are extremely high that this is a very irrational fear but in my book, it's not one worth testing my anxiety to confront.

Their is a flea market near me, it's one of those places where people buy a stall in a small warehouse. Right when you walk in the door there is this bigger stall selling all kinds of old games. Unfortunately because it's an old game they over charge.

Last time I was there, they were selling a copy of super mario/duck hunt for the NES, the one that anyone who collects for the NES has like 7 of them. They wanted $80 for it cause it was a retro game. They had a regular purple gamecube and they wanted $400 for it , because they said it's a "rare" retro console that's hard to find in a good working condition. They had a n64 for sale, they wanted $350 just for the console, nothing else. If you wanted a players choice copy of mario 64 it was another $100 for the game and apparently it's was a great deal.

Every other stall was literally junk. Kept seeing rusty dollars tools for $10, old broken fishing rods for $30 and knock off old phones that the guy kept trying to pass of as Antiques even though they would be in a box like you would find at Target or Walmart for $30ish, he would try to sell them for $300-400. I dont know how that place is still in business

Understandably so. I'm immuno-compromised and have acute asthma. (COVID would probably kill me tbh) And the thought of "dumpster-diving" really grosses me out. I too hate maggots more than most people. I did janitor work for Walmart for 6 years, and have had all kinds of "garbage sauce" splash on me, wanting to die every time it happened.

Like Lilith said, I don’t even have a functioning immune system. It wouldn’t be the best of ideas-

But I’m also quite a bit of a germaphobe, and I have morals that make me feel... like it’s a bit unacceptable to me to dive through a trash can to find things for my own hobbies or to find food.

The dumpsters over here dont really lend themselves for diving, but i've found cool stuff on the side
    -Two PCs
-A fax machine, with nearly an entire tube of thermal paper
-An office chair, after replacing the padding, and derusting and deinfecting the iron it was useable
    -Microwaves
One time i found a really nice CRT, but i was on my way to school so i couldn't take it with me, when i was going back home and could've, someone had smashed it for the copper
