A friend of mine used to go dumpster diving by a grocery store and found tons of food and chocolate and stuff that was often just thrown away because they needed the shelf space, not even expired.
Around here all the dumpsters are indoors or locked, so it wouldn't be possible even if I wanted to. I don't think it'd feel right digging around in someone's trash so I probably wouldn't do it, but maaaaybe. Depends on what kind of trash. If I had access to a dumpster belonging to an office or tech related building or something, where you might find expensive equipment (often fully working but just old, sometimes broken but easy to fix) like EEVBlog, that would be pretty interesting to see what I could find, and I wouldn't really have to dig around since often they'd just be laying on the top.

My friend used to dive on a dumpster where it was used by the ISP. he found various hubs, routers, even some HDDs from there. all working fine, and even witn sensitive informations. He was able to recover some serious personal informations from the HDD, I have no idea what they were thinking, those need to be shattered or at least be wiped clean.

Tech company dumpster really is a goldmine, in a both good way and illegal way.

btw I got some of the hubs and routers he scored. Router was unusable after using it for 6 months, but hub is still going strong. spreading ethernet to all the devices in my room.

I mean I've gotten stuff out of people's trash, but never from a dumpster

got a croquet set, a pc running windows 95, a few old boardgames, a backpack, a trashcan (probably my funniest find)
Same thing, no? A dumpster is someone's trash.

I was thinking bigger. Hmm, I don't think the thing with HDDs would happen here. Companies seem pretty professional, I sure hope none of them would just throw sensitive data in the trash without erasing it. I would expect that from some small startup who haven't really got security figured out yet, not from a big company like an ISP.

not quite, a dumpster is a giant container with lots of people's trash in it

someone's lawn trash is like a neat little pile of stuff sitting out waiting for the garbage man to come and get it

It doesn't have to be lots of people's trash. Could be from a single business, could be from someone who is remodeling and throwing out their entire kitchen or something.
