Hacking Pokemon X/Y Update 1.2

I'm just wondering how it is considered piracy when all of us had to buy Pokemon X or Y in order to play?

Piracy probably was a poor choice of words... He means hacking/cheating in this case.

Perhaps I am not informed so please shed some insight if I am wrong. So while this update blocks cheaters, it just so happens to also disables online play for those using emuNAND?

I do not intend to cheat at all.

That's probably an unrelated error, all the update does is encrypt online communications so Instacheck and battle analyzer can't be used anymore.
Although I should mention, using emuNAND means you're doing something not supported by Nintendo, in fact they make it a point to mention that using unofficial software and hardware in your 3DS might damage it.

I asked if the forced firmware/software update on Pokemon also disables online play for those with a Gateway but does not plan to cheat.

Yes, I'm afraid so. You cannot use online until you have the 1.2 patch. The only way to get the 1.2 patch is to download it from the eShop. And the eShop doesn't work with Gateway currently... We will have to wait for a fix from Gateway.

Well, the interesting thing is that Nintendo isn't even really actively going after Gateway. The Pokémon patch 1.2 was made supposedly to prevent cheating unrelated to Gateway.
And that EmuNAND 7.0 broke a few things for Gateway also wasn't completely intentional. Things apparently just got shifted around (causing certain features to stop functioning), not as a way to combat Gateway, but as a natural course of events in software development by Nintendo.

I disagree. Gateway is actually catching up. The last update they posted pointed to multi-rum support and getting Pokemon to work on the Gateway.

Companies like Nintendo always use the excuse of "it might damage your [console]". The same was said with the cards to the DS. After all these years my DS still seems to function ok.

Yes, but what that means is that if it does break, you can't complain about it to Nintendo, and if it stops working because of an update Nintendo did, tough shit.

The war against hacking and modding is and always will be never ending: The more people try to stop hackers, the more hackers will try to find ways around it.

If Pokemon are caught in an offline mode of any sort I dont see how hacked pokemon will be stopped. For example Smealums hacked pokemon would most likely still work with the 1.2 system

Yeah, that's what I was asking him.
He's the one that got into the 3DS, I wanted to see if he'd tried to break the Pokemon encryption, and if so, if he'd been successful or not.

anyone with the level of access to the console I have could *definitely* cheat, even online.
can't say anything for people who don't have that though. if nintendo did their job properly, then it should be impossible for people in the middle to read whatever data's being transmitted.

Smealum...? If I had to wager a guess, I'd say against... Especially online.
