  • Introduction
Pokemon NothingButBlack and NothingButWhite are a labor of love. I spent at least three whole hours scraping this project together, in fact this ROM hack makes the most changes to a game that I've ever seen. During my time making this ROM hack I had many ideas, and by spending all this time on it I was able to incorporate almost every one of them.

Anyways, this ROM hack was created because I felt that the existing ROM hacks for Pokemon in general had unimaginative names. True Black, Sparkling White, Deep Emerald, My Ass, Flaming Red, Pokemon Brown, etc. So I set out to make a ROM hack that would actually fit the title I gave it.

  • Changes
    • Number of badges: Unlike most other ROM hacks, this one changes the number of badges you can earn from the standard 8-per-region. I feel that this changes the flow of the game just enough so that it doesn't feel like you're playing a normal Pokemon game like usual.

    • Ability removal: Some people complain about additions to the old mechanics, such as abilities. I went ahead and removed them all to make sure that if one Pokemon is more powerful than another, it's because Arceus demanded it, like it should be. Don't listen to those pokegodless heathens that say otherwise.

    • Deaf friendly: Other Pokemon games may rely on immersive or upbeat music to change your mood during certain cutscenes. That's not very fair to deaf gamers, so I've made sure to try to set the mood in ways other than using music in the hopes that this will appeal to more people.

    • Gym leader rebalance: A common complaint in Pokemon is that the difficulty of the gym leader is often well above the difficulty of the other pokemon in that area, and gym leaders sometimes require grinding levels just to beat them. So to fix this, I nerfed all the gym leaders into pretty much nothing at all.

    • Assembly changes: Some of the changes I wanted to make were not possible in the original engine, so I changed most of the game's assembly code around so that it functions just the way I want. Compare this to other ROM hacks that just edit maps and scripts!

    • PC gender: Old farts Players of the older games like to think back on the times when you could play Pokemon without worrying about what your character looks like. The gender selection near the start of the game forces them to make an aesthetical decision that older games don't. To help this ROM hack appeal to more people, I've removed the gender selection step and the whole game is pretty androgynous now.

First off I'd like to thank my beta tester!

Anyways make sure that you're patching a clean ROM. Use a CRC32 calculation program and make sure the CRC matches this data for black or this data for white. Run xdeltaui.exe, select the patch file, then select your clean ROM file, then choose where to save the ROM hack and tell it to patch it.

Can you elaborate on how many more (or less) badges someone can now obtain in a region?

Also, I'm sorry but I'm going to have to report you. You posted this in the Pokemon Hack Screening Thread but you also went ahead and made a thread for it without approval...

Now, I believe in miracles, and a miracle has happened tonight.

I'm not sure if I could choose, though. I mean, I don't know about you, but I'm not going to spend my life being a color.

Almost one page and no reviews?

Some on guys, don't make me ask a mod to ban you for not praising me, because then I might need to start my own forum for this ROM hack, and I'm too lazy to google "free forums" and do that. Also it'd reset my post count, and we just cannot have that, as it means that everything I post is serious and people should listen instead of taking the content of the post itself into account.

Pokemon NothingButWhite takes a 10/10 from me.Everything is completely white :D
You will love this game and it's a special one it only consumes 75KB space from your MS >.>
Totally worth playing :)

I especially like how you have handled accessibility in your game. In addition to being deaf-friendly (which you stated in your post), something you didn't point out is how you can still effectively play it if you're colourblind.

Colour blindness affects how you see status bubbles, as well as shiny Pokémon, fainted Pokémon in the Pokémon list (as red) and a whole bunch of things.

You can make a world where even the most crippled person in the world can play Pokémon. Don't give up!

You can actually play this without hands, as well! Isn't that great?

Loving it! Definitely playing the sh*t out of this on my DS Lite :yaynds:

And idea for the title to the sequel of NothingButBlack is "Blacker than the blackest black times infinity"... but nah, that may be a bit too much :P

Darkened Charred Soul Black.

Alternatively, call it The Void.
