Have you actually tried? Most malware (and, for that matter, honest programs) nowadays use XP SP2+ kernel functions and thus fail to run on these vintage OSes, meaning that in typical online use yes, they're more secure than a moderately outdated modern Windows :D
daily reminder:

When an OS stops getting support, loads of viruses spring up specifically targeting it since vulnerabilities will no longer be patched. I wasn't saying viruses targeting modern OSes would attack the older ones.
Anyway, the point was supposed to be that new bugs and problems are going to arise in rxTools with every passing day. None of these are going to be patched so rxTools is going to get buggier and buggier, and harder and harder to set up, and harder and harder to troubleshoot and no one is going to fix it. On the other hand, any time something in the 3DS landscape changes that introduces a bug or weird behaviour or even just imperfect user experience, the devs are going to be right there releasing a new version of Luma so it continues to operate flawlessly.

You can actually get admin access on any Windows PC up to Windows 7 through forcing a power down while Windows is loading.

Pretty hilarious flaw that it took Microsoft forever to fix.
True, but that vid is more iconic, and they did have some safety measures for getting admin access that way (just that you can't do shit in safe mode except for rename files).

Once someone has physical access to your machine, there's very little stopping them in any case.

I didn't see any response to this, so here's an explanation.

"mset" is the System Settings program. Among other things, it allows you to change the DS profile name. A buffer overflow error in mset (starting in 4.1 I think?) allowed for arbitrary code execution due to a stack smash. Since the DS profile name could be set by any DS game (including flash carts), it was fairly popular as one of the first widespread 3DS exploits. The mset exploit was fixed in 7.0.

Regarding people still using RXtools: Whining about it won't get you anywhere.
  • Constantly bashing people for using RXtools is on the level of "stop liking what I don't like". What would you think if you were bashed for playing 3DS games instead of, say, mobile apps?
  • If RXtools is working for someone, great. If they encounter an issue with one of the tools (e.g. eMMC backup) let them know that there's newer entry points and CFWs available that might fix the issue.
  • Newer is not necessarily better. In the case of A9LH vs. menuhax and mset, sure; but what about other things like Windows 7 vs. Windows 10? (I personally prefer OSes that don't shove worthless apps in my face every five minutes.) [Bonus option: Newer 3DS firmware that patches exploits versus older 3DS firmware that still has exploits.]
Nowhere in here have I bashed anyone. Reminding people to stop using a dead CFW isn't bashing, it's pointing out a fact. RXTools is dead and there are options to replace it. It's best to change now instead of waiting for something to happen.
RXTools doesn't work though. Sure RXMode is working, but if you aren't actually using RXTools, then you are wasting your time.
In this case, newer is better because newer is being updated. Just beause something works, doesn't mean it's worth using. Windows XP still works, that doesn't mean you should keep it installed on your computer.

RXTools is dead, period, no debating. Using it "because it works," is like continuing to use Windows XP. Sure it works, but you aren't getting the best out of our system with it nor the most secure system.

How can I launch Luma from mset? I didn't see "CakesROP" in Luma code, which is required for mset launcher I guess. And I heard that Luma cannot be launched FROM a 4.x.x sysnand.
you can't run it from mset. use the browser. though you can't boot an 8.0+ emunand from a pre-7.0 sysnand using luma.

Thanks. I mean without upgrading sysnand...(That's because it's still too difficult for some newbies.)
If you can't update your sysNAND then stick with rxTools. Try and get up to speed in the next few months because the next firmware update might kill rxTools and then you'll have to update if you want to keep using your console.

Edit: of course excellent point by @ihaveamac, it's actually easier to install a9lh now than menuhax, if you're on less than 9.0. Kind of funny isn't it, stubborn menuhax users' main excuse is that a9lh is too hard :P

Last edited by Quantumcat,
most people think you'll need to have firmware 9.0-9.2 only to have a9lh
with the newest guide from plailect even old3ds firmware 4.x-5.x-6.x-7.x--9.2 can get a9lh straight in one hour, and straight to gaming upon boot without executing exploit every time. (and seeing an empty sysnand every time lol)
and you can even update luma from the 3ds itself using its updater
heck most of the people here will more gladly help you for doing this

I can't agree more following Plailect's guide is very very easy. However, there're still many ones who aren't good at or interested in softwares. If there's a way to boot latest firmware by just replacing files on SD card, it would be much easier for them. Well, they really should go to hell, shouldn't they?
