I'm using an action command to do a series of actions and save as a png file. however, every time I initiate the action, photoshop keeps opening each file and leaving them open. this ends up freezing my pc unless I go into task manager. I managed to get jpgs working by selecting jpg as my save option, then selecting it in the scripts/batch tool. does anyone know how to do this?

it's still not working (changed to ms paint). here's my action:

I've used the batch edit tool once in the past, and I don't recall having this issue, however it was only around 200-250 or so small files so it wouldn't have been enough to crash anything.
The only thing I can think to suggest is to do the files in smaller batches, close all the open files and move on to the next batch.

it's set as the default image editor, yes. I did change the png association though. it tries to make a filename.png , filename copy.png, and a filename.jpg despite saving it as png in the action. no matter what it wants to save it as a jpg. I saw in the automation tool that it has three save methods to choose from and one of them is jpg. I've been at this for hours changing things here and there, and I've made no progress.

I think I may have found the problem. it does seem to be related to the number of files. I tried a small number of files just a moment ago, and it worked without a problem. I then tried a large number of files again, and it kept making three copies of the same image and the files wouldn't close. I guess it's a bug with photoshop cs5 unless there's a workaround.

maybe it's obvious, but did you add the "close" command in your batch? I don't see your last command, I only see up to "save"

yeah, I've tried it with and without close. no matter what it ends up creating three images.
