You don't. That's the scary part. What I like to do is download HxD and open up the backup you make and check for NCSD on the right.

well i just got a brick (on a hardmodded console so no biggie its already restored to how it started) not sure if its related, but i went into the camera on 2.1 when it took a picture the 3DS crashed, rebooted and all appeared fine, but once i ran a 4.5 update with luigi's mansion it got right to the end then said "update failed please restart" upon restarting it just started to a "an error has occurred please shut down the console" message, so yeah just dump your OTP and get outta there don't mess around too long XD

you arent supposed to update using a game. AFAIK, you run Decrypt9 from your browser while on 2.1 and restore your nand backups

A better way to make sure is to dump it twice and check the md5/sha hashes
