Updating up to 6.x with a cart on N3DS works.
Beyond that it's a soft or full brick.

I'm just at the stage of doing the initial setup of the new emunand as part of the downgrade process. When setting the time, it was 13:37. I take this as a good omen.

I'm getting "Failed to get CIA file info!" when trying to downgrade emunand to 2.1. The 2.1 CIAs are in a folder called 'updates' in the root of the SD card. Do I just have to keep trying, or have I done something wrong?

I had that as well it was successful with the cia build

You can also load hb menu from EmuNAND using browserhax or something.

2DS Will probably not work. Don't attempt. An update is incoming to make it more stable.

Yay! I'm back on 9.2, now with one OTP to keep me company!

Here's what I did (O3DS, EUR)

1. Followed the tutorial for the spider method: https://github.com/Plailect/OTP/blob/master/Old_3DS_Spider.md
2. Backed up my NANDs and SD Card first.
3. Used rxTools pasta mode to install sysUpdater.cia on sysnand with FBI.
4. Verified my 2.1 downgrade files for integrity.
5. Took the plunge (pressed Y in sysupdater)
6. Deleted sysnand extdata (had black screen on reboot)
7. Now on 2.1.0-4E
8. Copied arm11.bin to SD card + ran the exploit using the browser
9. When I saw the flashing white screen, I waited for about 30 seconds before turning my 3DS off.
10. Copied a9f.bin to my PC. (and Dropbox, and even to school, can't have too many backups )
11. Deleted all of my internet connection settings and booted recovery mode before updating
12. Used Pokemon X, with wireless off, to upgrade to 6.1.0-4E
13. Added my wireless hotspot again and then copied Decrypt9's Launcher.dat to SD
14. Used Gateway's page to launch Decrypt9 (as dukesrg's didn't work for some reason)
15. Restored sysNAND and emuNAND
16. Unmounted SD card, replaced SD card contents with backup done in (2).
17. Rebooted, themehax booted into rxTools 10.5

Obviously, YMMV, especially on 2DS and N3DS. These are found to be more unstable, so I only recommend doing this on O3DS/XL models for now.

I found that the CIA version worked very well (I was considering using the 3dsx, but thought it wouldn't work as well.)

I won't try that because I don't have a hardmod and it would be useless to spend money to Frankensteinify my dear n3DS.
Too bad that we can't use just emunand to dump that OTP.

Spider is already in the 2.1E package (just checked the title ID). A person above said that updating with Pokemon to 6.x and then using spider (the internet browser) worked, so I'd like to have confirmation.

It works fine, I used sky3ds USA pokemon x but your probably asking for confirmation from someone else [emoji6]

It shouldn't matter, but you could also just install the CIA.
