Nintendo did say with a future update the IR sensor would almost function the same as a camera and would show shapes of objects on your screen

IR sensor. Not remotely like a camera.

Count me among those that are glad they didn't bother with a camera on Switch. They know it's not a device meant to replace your cell phone, it's for gaming.
It's an IR camera. Nintendo calls it a camera and they even said it would be able to record video according to someone else. Obviously it wouldn't be in color since it only captures IR, but with that kind of functionality already supported by the JoyCons there's nothing stopping them from making a camera addon for color video.

IR cameras can only see IR, it's a hardware limitation not software. Nobody accused Wii's sensor bar of actually recording you.

Am I the only one that thinks that the lack of microphone is a bigger loss then the lack of camera?

I'm good without both of these. When the XB CoD craze initially happened, people would play music through their microphone or yell stupid crap I didn't want to hear. When Wii U had Wii U Chat, I literally covered the camera because I like The Jetsons, but I want my flying car first.

I guess for Switch, having either of these things in the system might drain battery power, leave less room in the system, or add an extra cost, which would be put on the consumer.

Its like saying "who needs money anyways. You spend it on something stupid, then regret it, and then back to the initial state without the money. I prefer not having money..."
1. Mic isnt that pricy. The switch is already at a high price compared to what it offers hardware wise.... I mean, 32gb in 2017? Srsly nintendo? Most of the price isnt due to good specs anyways, putting a mic wont change profit dramatically...
2. Yes, there are instances when you dont wanna use mic, but it can be fixed with something as easy as a *button to enable/disable* which is a standart in pc in the last decade... using a mobile app for multiplayer is ridiculous... why not add a microphone?it adds more benefits for gaming then the problems it makes for us...
3. It doesnt draw battery when not used... if its not connected to the circuit when not in use then it wont draw power, like when the light bulb doesnt draw power when the light isnt powered on...
4. It doesnt use space in memory...
(I tried, but I cant stop myself from facepalming every time I see a fanboy trying to defend "their" brand after it did something that is very stupid...)

1. It might. Adding a microphone isn't as easy as you're probably thinking, especially if they can make a peripheral do the same or use that nifty Switch app they developed. As for the 32gb, I think it's justified for Nintendo. They were right about technology advancing and becoming cheaper for the consumer. If they add a 500gb storage now, they would probably pay a decent price, but not the same price as 32gb storage. And that cost would be passed to the consumer, which isn't a good idea. Even if it isn't much, it's still extra: time (to get the contracts), work (to engineer Switch with a bigger HDD), and money (for Nintendo and the consumer) for a feature that isn't a necessity. Trust, if you ask people if they'd rather more power, more battery, bigger HDD, or a microphone, power and battery would be the top choices.

2. If I'm disabling the use of a microphone, I guess I fall into the category of people who don't need it. Most Nintendo games are for children and Nintendo is family-friendly, so why put the idea into predators minds they can easily talk to kids? Sure, you had Miiverse, but if 400 characters of bad grammar on role-plays gets you off, go read the juicy parts of 50 Shades of Black. I'm also guessing this is why they took chat out of Pokemon games--to protect the kids.

Instead of asking why not, ask why? Why would they add a microphone if they can sell you a peripheral that they would have taken a loss on by implementing (including partnering with a company) a microphone, when they can maximize profits, especially when a handful of games would utilize the microphone. If you ever owned a Wii U, the answer is clear. Even on 3DS, there are so few games that fully utilize the microphone, it's laughable. I don't think a spinning logo or interacting with games that require you to blow in the microphone (DKCR) justify having the microphone. It's nice, but I wouldn't mind if 3DS didn't have a microphone.

3. So, you're saying add something that won't be used? If it is used, it'll draw power and which would you rather: play games longer or talk trash in one game that utilizes microphone support?
I guess for Switch, having either of these things in the system might drain battery power,

What? I'm literally talking about the physical space of Switch. I mean, there isn't too much room (inches, centimeters) left in the system itself. Where would be the ideal place to add a microphone? Maybe in a Switch revision, but I think there would have to be more games utilizing a microphone, cheaper parts, and a real demand.

(I tried, but I cant stop myself from facepalming every time I see a fanboy trying to defend "their" brand after it did something that is very stupid...)

I'm unsure if you're trying to call me a fanboy, but I'm just being real. Out of curiosity, if you own a Switch, which games would you want to have chat? As far as I can tell, the only game you might need a microphone for are Splatoon 2 and I'm drawing a blank for anything else.

The only thing I could see taking off and being a huge success would be a karaoke game. Good luck with the licensing on the music.

Honestly there are a lot of things that could be added by either selling a "shim" that goes between the console and the Joycon, or just selling refreshed Joycon

The Switch could turn out to be a very modular console, and that's really exciting to me
