Hacking on 4.5 with gateway, upgrade to a CFW?

I have a original 3ds currently on firmware 4.5, and I have a gateway.

I've read that Custom Firmware is the way to go now, and that gateway has an arm9loaderhax thing but people seem to say it is worse than the open source ones?

Is it safe to just install something likeluma3ds on my 4.5, if i do that, do i lose gateway? should I care?

You can install a9lh and later have Gateway work with it (so you boot Gateway mode by holding a key at startup). Definitely stay away from Gateway's method - it's very unsafe and has less (no) features when finished.

Follow Plailect's guide for the a9lh install, then when done, look for a topic called something like "make gateway work with v2 a9lh". I'll find the links later if nobody has replied with them by then. Good luck!!
