Hacking noob questions

Ok so about a year ago i got my wii modded and was told to never ever turn on wii connect 24, and never ever do updates. But i see that alot has changed in the last year and the guy i had mod my wii has moved. So been spending alot of time reading and want imput on my system and what i might do.

JUST WONDERING DO I NEED TO UPDATE ANYTHING AND CAN I UPDATE MY WII SOFTWARE AND NOT BRICK MY WII.
