Hacking noob questions

Ok so about a year ago i got my wii modded and was told to never ever turn on wii connect 24, and never ever do updates. But i see that alot has changed in the last year and the guy i had mod my wii has moved. So been spending alot of time reading and want imput on my system and what i might do.

system has the following

1gb external usb hard drive with approx 300 games

    I spent nearly a year in a day yesterday trying to jailbreak my ps4 again so I can play the newest Fallout 4 update just to find out that the update is for 11.50 firmware and I'm on 11.00. On top of that, I can't seem to get my custom song to work in djmax. I can't believe I wasted all of that time for disappointment. I just hope the rest mode worked.
