I have once again let my Wii dust down, but with todays E3 and several intersting games released lately I started it up gain. So here is the story:

I have the very first wiikey with 1.9. Can't remember if this is s or g. Updated it after SMG1 I believe. When Metroid Trilogy was released I installed bootmii (I believe), homebrew channel and backuploader which I use instead of the normal disc screen. Also updated to the newest firmware back then. Can't remember if it is 4.0 or 4.1. Also installed some IOS or CIOS. Again, can't remember which.

My question is: What do I do now? I want to install the newest software so I am able to play SMG2 at least. No More Heroes 2 and Red Steel 2 would be cool too. How do I go about doing this? A quick, step by step guide would be awesomeness.

Alright, I tried to mod my Wii a while ago but it was all so confusing. Let's give it another go.

I have a 4.2U version Wii and I want to play backup copies on it. All help is apreciated, everything is just so confusing I can't figure it out even with the stickys

Also, does doing this give the Wii the same problem as a DS flashcart? (Anti piracy needing rom patches, fixes, etc). Can I use Wi-Fi connection and Wii connect 24 (Including installing future updates) after doing this?

Oh, BTW I want to install a "virtual chip" so I don't have to open the console

is there a flat out easy 100% way to get GH5 on usb loader working? im still kinda of a noob, mines chipped, 4.1, i have hbc and dozens of apps in it. i play all the new games etc etc. but i get a black screen and nothing else when i try to load it *not a black screen and reboot. any1 wanna point me to what exactly to download and install . i looked but it looked kinda confusing with install this inside this while using this to ghost this one so it reads that one and when u load use that one lol

Well yeah, but I have a chip so I don't need to do a softmod right? It is a bit confusing and I guess it should be an easier/faster way to get my system up tp date? I mean just by installing some new IOS/CIOS and updating to 4.2?

If you have a chip just press the wii system update button to get to 4.2 and all games will run fine.

In my experience that isn't entirely correct. To run Metroid Prime Trilogy I had to install lots of Cios, ios and other software to get it to work. Mind you, this wasa a retail version though.

Since I have all this software installed won't upgrading to 4.2 through Nintendo brick my wii?

And why not install the latest cIOS's as you've allready homebrew enabled? It's safe or just update or get the IOS's needed for the games, because afaik an older cIOS should work fine also.

Just received super mario galaxy 2 and I am unable to play it on my wii, I had hacked it around 6 months - 1 year ago and I am lost on what to do.
From what I remember, I have the homebrew channel installed, pre-loader 0.29 and am on firmware 4.0.
Also when playing games, I always have to take the game out and re-insert it to the wii to play it as it is unable read the disc.
Is it safe to use the guides on here to install the homebrew channel again and hackmii etc or is there a chance it will brick it, please ask me any other questions about my wii as I am not sure where I am going with all this.

All help would be appreciated thanks, or if someone could link me to a thread that explains all of my questions it would be great. Thanks!

EDIT: I've read around abit, would it be possible to use the Modify ANY Wii guide to overwrite the previously installed hacks etc? or could this result in a brick also is there a specific IOS(?) I need to install to be able to run Super Mario Galaxy 2?

Doesn't updating to 4.2 delete homebrew channel? So it is possible to just get the latest cIOS and IOS and everything is fine and dandy?

If you update using the stickied guide (by just installing the 4.2 system menu wad and the ~22 other IOS wads), then the homebrew channel won't be deleted. It's basically all the advantages of 4.2 and none of the disadvantages of updating through Ninty (stub ios'es, etc.).

If you don't have bootmii installed and a NAND backup made I'd do that before doing anything else though.

Actually after reading, re-reading and re-reading again I think I've made sense of most things however I still have one more question, to play the backups, do I need DARKCORP or just DVDX, or both?

If you want to load backups through the disc channel you'll need DarkCORP. Otherwise you can use a loader like NeoGamma to load them (either install a NeoGamma channel or launch it from the homebrew channel).

I don't believe you need DVDx for backups at all. It's just for enabling watching movie DVD's.

Just purchased a nice ready-modded Wii, and am looking for some kind of storage to run the games from.

I was tempted by just a 16GB usb flash drive, since there'll be no fuss with cables, no mess, and I'd still get 4 or even 5 games on there at a time.

But then I thought, hang on, what about those small 2.5 USB drives you can get? Something like a Western Digital Passport drive? Will the Wii power those things on it's own, or will I need one with a separate adapter? Could be the difference between me going for a hard drive or just a 16GB stick.

Yes the USB powered drives work perfectly fine but be sure to check the compatibillity list here to see which ones are compatible

Awesome thank you! Got an old Maxtor One Touch 40GB somewhere, not exactly great capacity but should be able to fit 10 games on there, should be more than enough I hope!

Also remember that WBFS files shrink most wii games, Example TP is like 4 gb on an ISO and about 1 as WBFS.
