Nintendo has delayed their online subscription, that was set to launch in Autumn 2017, to launch sometime in 2018, meaning users will get some more time experiencing online on the Switch for free! They also revealed the prices and the fact that people with a paid subscription will get access to older games with new online play support. The full details and prices can be seen below.
Online lobby and voice chat
Our new dedicated smart device app will connect to Nintendo Switch and let you invite friends to play online, set play appointments, and chat with friends during online matches in compatible games─all from your smart device.

A free, limited version of this app will be available for download in summer 2017.

Classic Game Selection*
Subscribers will get to download a compilation of classic titles with added online play, such as Super Mario Bros. 3, Balloon Fight and Dr. Mario.
Subscription prices:

1-Month Membership
$3.99 (USD)

3-Month Membership
$7.99 (USD)

12-Month Membership
$19.99 (USD)

More information regarding the classic games collection:
Nintendo confirmed that this monthly plan has indeed changed, telling Kotaku: “Nintendo Switch Online subscribers will have ongoing access to a library of classic games with added online play. Users can play as many of the games as they want, as often as they like, as long as they have an active subscription.”

$20 a year? NBD.
I am not the type of person who always plays online, so I wouldn't mind buying the monthly experience, so for only 3.99 dollars it is not bad

Basically, we own the hardware we purchase, that's what I get from that.

Might I add too that I can't wait to see 002-0102 message on Switch, someone snap a screenshot of that.

I thought we have always known that. That is why homebrew is legal in the U.S. it is only piracy that is illegal.

At that yearly price, I won't feel guilty even if I barely use it. MMOs are $15 a MONTH, those you have to play constantly to feel like you're getting your money's worth.

Excellent price, NES games with netplay is 1000x better than the shitty free games Sony offers, and of course you get the standard stuff like eshop discounts.

I'm very pleased with this and can't wait to play Mario 3 online with a bud.

20 bucks a year is cheap. I hope it adds some features and improves online to justify the fact that it costs any money at all tho.
On the one hand: It will only include vc games and you only rent them for a month, you do not get to keep them.

On the other hand: I do like the idea of online support for older games. I would love to play pokemon stadium, Mario party, and super bomberman online.

I still can't believe that people are sold on the idea of paying for internet when it comes to Nintendo products, maybe I missed the really cool list that shows all the cool things you can do with their paid service but I don't think I have.
I am more or less excited it will be free for this whole year until we get a good library. This year we have splatoons2 and arms with online support

It's basically the same as PSN or XBL, except cheaper. I don't think any console should have paid online, but it's just the world we live in now. Oh well.

I was very pissed about Nintendo when they said you do not get to keep the games. But with only 20 bucks, and with online support with old games. it looks worth it. Who knows, maybe they will announce another benefit this e3? I would love if they would do something similar to xbox game pass but for virtual console games. At least as an option.

1.67 USD per month is too much?

Great freaking price. I did not expect it to be $20 a month, but then again, it's not XBL or PSN by any standard.

Also, Canada is probably going to be $30 because of our dollar. Sigh, oh well, still pretty good.

do you guys get more money to make up for that fact that prices are more expensive?

No, we don't. Like the Switch over here costs $399 CAN while you guys have it for $299. But we don't have increased enough wages to make up that margin to compare with yours, so it just becomes more expensive for us.

The exchange rate for the Canadian Dollar to the US Dollar is .74. That means $399 CAN is worth $295 US.

Canadian Dollars and US Dollars are completely different currencies and shouldn't be expected to have the same value; as such you should not expect the price on goods to be the same number of monetary units across different currencies.

As for how much money people make, well that's going to be dependent on more than just the country they are in. Salaries can differ greatly across the US, so you'll have people working the same job earning the same type of currency earning different amounts due to location. Prices on some goods may be lower in those regions where people make less money, such as housing, but people in Bumfuck USA making a salary commensurate with the minimal cost of living there will pay the same $299 for a switch as someone making an inflated salary in New York City.
