It's the beginning of a new month, which means that it's time for Nintendo to reveal the newest additions to their Nintendo Switch Online NES lineup. On April 10th, Super Mario Bros. The Lost Levels, Punch-Out!! Featuring Mr. Dream, and Star Soldier will all become playable for any subscribers to the service.

Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels – Originally released in Japan as Super Mario Bros.® 2, this game has previously made only brief cameo appearances in the Western Hemisphere. Mario fans will appreciate the familiar look and feel of the game, while finding that its updated gameplay creates an entirely new challenge. In addition to the classic enemies already known to fans worldwide, there are also Poison Mushrooms, backward Warp Zones and the occasional wind gust (which can help or hinder your progress).

Punch-Out!! Featuring Mr. Dream – As young boxer Little Mac, players have a once-in-a-lifetime chance to battle the big guys of the World Video Boxing Association circuit. Take them on one by one, starting with skinny Glass Joe. Battle up through King Hippo and all the way to the WVBA Champion himself. Players use their best jabs, hooks and power uppercuts to knock out opponents, but must also dodge jaw-breaking blows by paying attention to subtle changes in their foe’s body position.

Star Soldier – The standard for vertically scrolling shooters, Star Soldier is the original game that spawned all of the titles in the long-running Soldierseries. Go inside a floating space station inhabited by a giant computer known as Starbrain. Your mission: to stop Starbrain’s galactic invasion by piloting Caesar, a new compact space fighter, through 16 deadly stages.

Which is (to the extent possible) exactly what Nintendo should be making available with their online subscription. Don't get me wrong, I love the NES. I was a freshman in college when it came out in the USA, so my experience with the thing was very hands-on from launch. I was viciously good at RC Pro Am and beat Contra several times without the Konami code. I blew my GPA on Final Fantasy and bong-hits instead of studying. And I've been a Nintendo fan ever since. But meting these games out 30 years later a few at a time as if they still hold substantial retail value is absurd. I have an AV Famicom and a EDN8 cart, modded consoles that can run emu's, and PC's that can run emu's. If Nintendo wants to offer a VC lineup on the Switch as a bonus to their online subscription service, it should be more like a few hundred NES and SNES titles, not just a few. At this time I still haven't paid for their online and have no plans to ... Mario Kart is the only game on Switch I want to play online at this time, and for just that it's not worth it. Nintendo needs to make it more worth it. Just my grumpy opinion.

Still remember playing Lost Levels in All Stars. Absolutely hated it and having secret warp pipes take you back to an earlier level is just evil. Was only able to complete it with save states on an emulator in the end so expect a lot of reloading save slots when this comes out.

Well, it is not streaming (considering streaming is another very real technology). In this case it's more of a digital rental.

I'm not that annoyed by the NES games being offered. It's not like I'm having the online subscription for those games, but to play online games. It's a nice bonus that I actually enjoy. And being older, I guess my limited time is more easily satisfied with a few games every now and then along with the "real" switch games.

Everyone likes to whine and complain about Nintendo Online's game selection and lack of games outside of the NES, but the games we do have is shaping up to be quite a queue of classics. Just wish we got some Konami Games; there's probably some licensing issues.

Man, I have always been a Nintendo Fan and always will be, but their Online selection is pretty lame. I mean, there are some great classics and many games wich I grew up with but, more than two years after the Switch sees the light only this? I would be pretty happy with SNES and a bunch of N64 ones but no, not even a full lineup of NES games. It`s kind of creepy, and unbelievable to be honest.

But oh well. Good games nonetheless... What a world.

I'm still not a fan of the drip-feeding of NES titles that we've been able to play for years. I really wish they had a library of virtual console titles on the eShop that they moved from platform to platform, instead of starting everything from the ground up every time a new console is released.

I would gladly buy these ROMs or pay for a service if I knew it was going to carry over to the next platform/generation, but I know it never does.
