Nintendo Labo announced

Nintendo has revealed the announcement they were teasing for today, and at 10 PM GMT, the Nintendo Labo was revealed to the public. Focusing on three key tenets of "make, play, and discover", the Nintendo Labo are "Toy-Cons" that consist of cardboard and can be crafted together to create things such as a little piano, house, fishing rod, and more. The Nintendo Switch Joy-Cons are then placed within them, for interactivity. To start, there will be two kits, one that's a variety kit which includes a fishing rod, 2 cars, a house, a motorbike handlebar, and a piano. The second, is a "robotic backpack suit". The products will cost $69.99 or $79.99 respectively.

Both sets will release on April 20, 2018, and Nintendo will be holding hands-on events to demo the Nintendo Labo in New York City from Feb. 2-3, and in San Francisco from Mar. 2-4. If you're interested, you can register for that here. The Labo will require folding the cardboard in order to make it form into the object you want, by following the guidlines provided in the box. Some of the creations will also have minigames that utilize the Joy-Cons, where you use the rumbling from the controller in order to know when to reel in the fishing pole. Also shown was a piano, which plays music when the cardboard keys are pressed.

Ppl, the price is for the *bundled software*
Look at the image. Each of the packs has a small box with a switch cart inside. It comes with a game, and it costs a lil....
I still think its overpriced. I think when/if it will be on eshop- they will release the printable pdfs or whatever.... thats a cool idea! Again nintendo surprised all of us, as always

Every modern game console has other uses too. It's what makes it even remotely competitive vs PC.
they don't let you run your own code though with out a dev kit even if they restricted it to only home brew people would still use it for emulators. With pc you can run anything you want. the reason why pc is more expensive is you need better specs for pc then a console since windows uses more resourses then console os do.

That's not related to the point i was making at all. My point was that a console which has a browser, video streaming, etc etc is more competitive with pc than without. It's not competitive at all, but it's more competitive.

It is overpriced since the games (especially the various pack) very short ones that anyone will get bored off quickly.

Yeah, the game itself is overpriced as hell, but such is Nintendo, remember 1 2 Switch, it was also terribly overpriced for what it is

To be honest I think this is genius.
The only problem is the price point.
I think it is OK for the "starter" kit that includes the "game" and all the parts to cost $60-$70.
But there must be some "replacement" kits, with the cardboard and other pieces that may require replacement for way cheaper, no more than $20.
I don't think the cardboard would last long if used like in that video, so paying $60-$70 again after three months to replace the broken places is a big no.

That said, I would totally buy this for my niece.

just buy kids good switch games they will last them much longer then this,
If the kid doesn't use it, I would use it myself.
You know that bad uncle saying that I just made up, "buy the kid what you like and if he/she doesn't like it it still isn't a waste of money".

The price point is definitely the issue. It'll be fun for a short time, the building will be nice too. But for 80$ it's simply too much. They should"ve sold it for 25$ for variety kit and 30$ for robot kit. Make the game a digital download to save some money on the carts.

Also they're going to offer the patterns for download but i'm confused as to how this is going to work? For the variety kit it might all fit on A4 papers but the robot kit won't. So then you'll have to overlay papers and cut it out and all. It just sounds like a nightmare to do. Plus i presume the tolerances will be tight too. Especially on the piano and such.

This is sheer idiocy and brilliance at the same time, along with a heaping helping of pure evil. They get to charge a premium price for what essentially amounts to first-party shovelware, and the manufacturing cost will be negligible. I expect that gullible kids will be the ideal demographic for this, and unfortunately, that's also the age group that is most likely to utterly destroy the cardboard bits within minutes/hours of purchase.

And you guys think $80 is bad for this, just wait until they release the global prices. $80 is the equivalent of around £58. But I can guarantee, when this launches in the UK, it'll launch at £80.

Can I nominate this thread for thread of the year already? I see so many people cracking jokes at this that in terms of marketing, it'll sell itself. Keep it up, guys. It's probably the best fun I've had on any announcement. :P

Hey Nintendo, how's about you catch up with the other consoles first, including your own handhelds? The Switch still has no (official) web browser, no multimedia player, no YouTube client, no Netflix, pretty much no multimedia apps at all besides Niconico which is specific to Japan. You've had time since March. You've made a £279,99 tablet that doesn't do anything, that should be disconcerting.
On the plus side: nintendo has real life minecraft with this thing! :P

I can't speak on behalf of switch cartridges, but have you seen kids actually using wiiu or wii discs? I mean...after a friend of mine who literally uses his windows DVD as cup placement mat, my nephews-in-law take the cake of abusing their discs (just having it "somewhere" in the file cabinet, at best accidentally in a wrong box and attempting to insert a disc where there's already one in the device...and that's just in ONE evening).

I think just like you. Well, i don't think it's "genius" but smart for sure.
I think that most of the users here don't have children, and always consider the videogame for themselves.
Hey, no complain, no blame !
But i have 2 sons, 7 yo and 4 yo. And i thank Nintendo for creating the Switch
My 7 yo enjoy a lot the controversial games that a lot of people hate such as Breat Of the Wild : unlike the other Zelda, if you don't get what you have to progress, here, you always ave interesting things to do.
Same thing for Super Mario Odyssey, and its noob assistant.
My 4 yo can finally play with us with Mario Kart 8 DX. Yes i already owned the WiiU game, but with the noob assistant, all the family can enjoy the game.
And i'm sure that this Nintendo Labo will be a full success at home. They already craft some toys with paper, scissors and glue. Now they will make them alive.

Don't forget that videogame is a GAME. It's done to play. No matter how you'll enjoy it.

Now, the only problem i see is the price. It should be half of the one givern.

Brilliance and psychotic in equal measure - good ole Nintendo, don't you ever change!!
The idea, for young children, is excellent: mad but excellent... yet while it's difficult to think of a better material to use - cardboard? Fukkin cardboard!!? And you're charging 70-80 for a pack? Ohhhh-kay...

Guys, the target audience isn’t you, Nintendo will announce hardcore stuff for us soon.

They want to get kids interested to Nintendo products and IP, their latest surveys tells them majority of Switch owners are adults, next 10-20 years or so Nintendo will struggle as their current audience ages, they need to get kids back into Nintendo somehow.

For me the models look to be too complicated to build with printable pdfs.

I guess part of the experience is building it up together with your kid.
It would be a shared experience, the kid may enjoy being part of building it and all the time he/she will be seeing the internals and getting a clue of how it all works. I think kids find this rather amusing.
