My friend bought a relatively new DSi on eBay. This DSi has the USA as a region. Since he can't speak a little English, French or Spanish, I came to use an EU mainboard. When I used that and switched it on, it froze when starting with a white screen. (The mainboard and the corresponding DSi were equipped with Unlaunch and HiyaCFW.) So I put the USA mainboard back in and now only the blue LED comes on and the touchscreen flashes once and then switches off again.

Do you have to throw it in the bin or is there anything left to save?

For the board that the touch screen flashes and goes off - this indicates a problem with the top screen.
Check that the ribbon cable is correctly seated,

For the board the crashes when switching it on, was there any writing on the screen? - if so, freezing when it says "Nintendo" on the screen is usually symptom of the camera ribbon cable not being seated properly.
