I just stopped in a Gamestop, and asked if I was guaranteed my handheld at launch, and this is what they said:
1) If you pre-ordered a Nintendo 3DS, you will get one at launch. (I'm not sure whether they are still taking pre-orders).
2) If you do not have a pre-order, at launch you won't be able to get one from Gamestop (So you'll have to camp out somewhere else).
3) "The United States is only getting 4 million units at launch. (Only? Seems like a ton to me).
4) Their store was getting around 300 Nintendo 3DS, and it is an average size Gamestop.
It's up to you whether you want to trust this or not, because... well, it's Gamestop. Personally, everything sounds about right to me. No real surprises here.
I'm just glad I'm not going to have to camp out like I did for the Wii.
