Hmm, received my R4DS today. It is the first generation R4DS with 2nd generation goodies (a new, smaller and better microSD reader and a blue strap). Really happy.

I think this'll only affect new M3 simply buyers more than R4 owners. Who wants to use dated M3 firmware anyways? If R4's firmware updates stop, so will M3s most probably. Unless they wanna put some of their M3s profits into development? Hmmph, who knows. Most importantly... who cares? Especially since everyone seems to be happy these days.

Not really - only a few of the second generation come with the old reader.
I was lucky enough to receive a 1st generation R4 with the new stuff.

Still second batch or not. R4 is still the best card out there so it will still sell. about 75% of the people here can't even soldier anyways or afraid of damaging there card so whats really the big deal about them getting rid of the extra soldier points? I haven't heard a logical reason yet why this is such a big deal.

Might be time to clean that keyboard

I personally prefer the chain.. it's alot more macho than the girlish blue strap

The only real noticeable improvement seems to be the USB cardreader.. but considering my blue USB cardreader is working perfectly fine... I would prefer the first batch as they offer the option to switch between M3 simply and R4.

I just got my R4, from the new batch, and it won't find drivers for the card reader on my Windows Vista PC. Doesn't matter too much, as I have the SD adapter and an SD reader, but its a little annoying.

(Note I'm not blaming the R4 people, in all likelihood its MS's fault.)

/agree. Chain is awesome and the blue USB card reader is perfect. Now the question I have is: Did they also create a modified version to supply to M3 so that those cards can't be swapped to R4's?

No drivers are needed - it's a usb mass storage device, which windows should automatically pick up without the need for any drivers.

As to preference of keychain or strap - they are both useless (to me) and I've left mine in the box. Whichever I got I would have done the same.

Yeah, you'd think that, because thats what it is. Vista comes up that it recognizes a mass storage device, and then it shows no drivers found. I've had similar issues with a Bluetooth headset that worked in XP, and not in Vista. I'll have to check the reader in XP.

Vista sounds like crap. I think this is where i get off the windows upgrade band wagon. XP is as good as it gets. Maybe in 10 years i might change that mind. To use Vista properly take your current computer throw it in the trash and then go buy another one that costs 2,000$ just so you can now run Microsoft Paint...

Haha, well, it took me over half a year to even to jump on the XP bandwagon when it first released. Not only did it seem like shit to me based on what I had read, I still couldn't get over it's shitty default luna theme

I figure Vista will be the same way. I'll sit on XP for a long ass time. Either until it starts to become outdated, or something gives me a reason to switch. But if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

I know this might sound like a dumb question but with all these people complaining about the second batch, what exactly is the advantage of switching the R4 to an M3 Simply? I seriously don't get it unless it's just for showing off. Don't they both do exactly the same thing, the M3 doesn't have any extra features or anything does it?

There is no advantage/disadvantage at all currently. I guess a lot of people are "complaining" because something they had the capability of doing with batch 1 (swapping M3/R4) was taken away from them with batch 2

No one likes it when stuff is taken away from them, regardless of it's benefit

I have a three year old computer, and it runs Vista completely fine, so I think part of the performance recommendations are exaggerated. Also, there's a ton of little things that make me like Vista much better than XP. For the few driver issues, there's either fixes (using a different Bluetooth stack), or it doesn't matter much, since I have the microSD to SD adapter and an SD reader that works fine in XP.

I'll have to use my dual-boot setup anyway to boot XP and make sure the reader works, but other than that, I probably won't use it anyway.

I hope R4 Never drops their updates
I think R4 will never drop updates. If they stop, it's cause they are doing making updates and that's the final one
tongue.gif
M3 won't have any that will surpass it. And to be honest, I think M3 will just drop the whole thing completely first. Of course, this all just my outlook, but it doesn't make much sense for them to keep supporting something they OEM and only make a certain percentage off when they could (and I believe they are iirc) just develop their own and make 100% profit. They'll direct all their focus to that first ;p

If R4/M3simply never had another update, I'd be fine with that. The product works great as is. And if problems arise in the future w/ new games, I still think the $45 I spent for well over 800 games is a great deal.
