Hardware New PC Build Help

SLI for Nvidia, CF for AMD.

Anyway, all I'm saying is that since OP started with performance grade GPU such as HD7950, I'm assuming OP didn't game at less demanding situation. Single HD7970 is better than 2 x HD7850 (single GPU works on all game and no stuttering).

As for the motherboard, the one I picked, Z87-D3HP, is the top quality one around its price point. The only downside on this particular motherboard is PCIe x16/x4 configuration, not suitable of SLI/CF. RAM didn't matter that much anyway (RAM either works or doesn't work, and overclocking RAM yields least performance boost on Intel setup so most people don't do it).

I think it was a 600w corsair psu that blew a mini atx asrock board, the 4 pin connect popped on me I have some pics of it out some place on the web.
 
Your budget is unneccessarily high, you honestly won't get a lot of bang for your buck if you buy all top-end components. In a year there'll be something equally good out at a cheaper price, so it's better to get beefy (but not overpriced) hardware, and upgrade later on instead.

You'll want to go with a beefy Core i7 (latest gen) CPU.

As for GPU, Maybe a GTX690, GTX Titan or ASUS Rog Ares II (dual HD7970), but they'll eat up a huge chunk of your budget and IMO don't last long enough (performance-wise) to be worth it. I'd go with something around half that price, like a GTX 680 or a HD7970, and upgrade it later on when hardware is more powerful, getting a more powerful GPU in the end without paying more in total.

RAM is quite cheap, but realistically you won't need 16 GB unless you do some heavy rendering. By the time things require that much RAM, DDR3 might be obsolete anyway, so there's not much point in buying it now. That said, RAM is still cheap, so if you get a good deal on 16GB of RAM you might as well go for it.

As far as SSDs go, I don't have a lot of experience with them myself but Intel is widely renowned as the best SSD manufacturer (though rather pricy) so definitely go with them. I have a SSD on my laptop and honestly don't think it's worth the money, sure windows boots fast and apps open faster, but I don't reboot/open apps constantly, so for me it's not a big difference. But that's just my opinion.

As I don't live in US I can't really give you any links to product pages, but I see there are other people doing a pretty good job at that :P

No, he won't. i7s have very few gains over i5s in gaming.

The 770 would be a much better option

The Samsung 840 Pro is the best performing one. Intel is pretty overpriced right now and performs a bit worse.

With that sort of budget, TC might as well give me $800 for my desired build and still have $1.2K left over for a still pretty solid build. :D

As for what you need, most of your tasks aren't quite as CPU intensive you could really just go with an i5 and just dump big money into a solid GPU.

Also as for being quiet, you could always use a closed-loop cooler to cool the CPU. Easy to maintain (read: no work after installing) and decent enough cooling. Custom water loops are nice though and you can customize it to look super cool.

Stay away from AMD CPUs. I can not stress this enough. They do NOT perform well.
Also that PSU is way more powerful than he needs.
Are you sure that PSU will even fit in the desktop? mSATA SSDs are designed for laptops, and you need a mini-PCIe port to plug it into which normal motherboards don't have.
I would not recommend that build, it uses components from several brands I've never even heard of. Stick with known good and popular manufacturers, like Corsair for PSU/RAM.
He will definitely want a 3rd party CPU cooler too, stock ones are not particularly quiet.
 
First of, what's with pairing 1.2 kW PSU to FX-8350 & GTX 770? Even if you overclock power-hungry FX-8350 you wouldn't need that much power. It is very important not to pair an overkill PSU to a system, due to how 80 Plus is being measured.

People buy Intel SSD for its reliability and warranty (Intel offers 5 year warranty on its SSD, longest I have seen). In comparison Samsung offers 3 years warranty instead. That being said you will not realize any performance difference between Samsung and Intel SSD. Most people use SSD for fast random read speed, which has and always will be a problem for HDDs.

The engineer in me always doubled the strength of the PSU when compared to my power requirements.
PSUs convert AC to DC, and that's not exactly a clean process. Energy is lost as waste, and the "efficiency" of a PSU is generally best around 70-80% load. Outside of that range, efficiency drops, and more of the power being taken in is simply vented as heat (which is wasted electricity as far as powering a computer is concerned).

80 Plus measures efficiency only at 3 load scenario (20, 50 and 100% load). It doesn't mandate efficiency requirement outside of these 3 load scenarios.

What this means for PSU makers is that they will optimize their PSU solely around at 3 load condition to reduce cost of production. Running overkill PSU means you are very likely running them at inefficient manner (more heat output). Even when you factor capacitors aging these PSU will go through you still do not need overkill PSU. You simply are hurting your wallet and not making the best use of your PSU.

The PSU produces more heat if it's underloaded?
Makes me feel a little sad since I've kept my 1kW PSU from the days when I tested multi-GPU systems (the joys of a system builder) and it's been stuck at around 50% load for the last few years.
