This may sound stupid, but do I need to buy the "New Nintendo 3DS" to play the upcoming Xenoblade Chronicles and Monster Hunter 4, or will they also work on standard 3DS? Thoughts appreciated :)

Both of those titles are New 3DS exclusive, which means you can play them on the New 3DS only.

MH4 demo and MHU4 JPN are playable on all 3ds's, so im positive MH4 is going to be playable on all 3ds's as well.

MH4 would just load much quicker on the N3ds, just like Smash bros will.
Besides that the new thumb stick is going to be controlling the camera, which it will also do in Zelda:MM.

As of yet, only Xenoblade is exclusive to the n3DS the other games are enhanced when playing on the n3DS and also work on the non new 3DS

Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate is not New 3DS exclusive however the game is 'New 3DS enhanced' taking advantage of the upgraded hardware on the New 3DS to provide slightly more detailed graphics, a smoother frame rate of 60 FPS offline and online and the use of the C-stick for camera control.

Where as on the old 3DS Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate graphics will look slightly less detailed (but not noticeable), will only run at 30 FPS online and will have to use either the d-pad or bottom touch screen for camera control.
