If you use one of the 27 mega evolutions included in my comprehensive Pokemon ID lists, you will level up faster than normal, and may even get a free level or two when starting the game!
I used Mega Mawile as my starter and was pleasantly surprised to see him jump to level 7 from the get-go!
Not sure if this pattern holds for all permanent mega evolutions, but it's a neat discovery nonetheless.
EDIT: It appears that the pattern does NOT hold for all "permanent" mega evolutions. I tried changing my partner to Mega Ampharos, only for her to drop to level 4. Ouch...
