So a Canadian class-action lawsuit over PSN's 2011 hack and outage was settled recently, and Sony is willing to give additional reimbursement for Canadians affected by the downtime. Too bad this thing is only claimable via snail-mail...
and I'm probably not eligible since I didn't use my real information when making my account, but that's not Sony's fault

There are four benefits for PSN users:

A= Anyone who stopped using their PSN account after the hacking can close their account and be reimbursed for any currency that is still on their account.

B= Anyone who continued using PSN after the blackout and claimed their free stuff during the "Welcome Back" program is able to choose from 1) one free additional game, 2) 3 free XMB themes, or 3) a 50% discount on PlayStation Plus for 3 months*.

C= Anyone who continued using PSN after the blackout and didn't participate during the "Welcome Back" program is able to choose two options from B, or choose to double their bonus (i.e. 2 free games, 6 XMB themes, or 6mo PS+ discount*).

D= Anyone who was paying for other services (such as Netflix) and didn't access the services using other means during the downtime is able to choose from 1) 3 free XMB themes, or 2) a 50% discount on PlayStation Plus for 3 months*.

    *only valid for non-PS+ subscribers

There are also separate benefits for Qriosity users (1 month free Music Unlimited), SOE users ($4.50 USD worth of Station Cash), and identity theft victims (reimbursement for any damage caused).

Isn't this compensation a little bit too late?

    Very typical for class-action lawsuit.

Legal stuff takes time. Glad to see some reimbursement and sooner is better than later. Or in this case never.

I don't see why Canada feels entitled to even more free shit. They were hit the same as absolutely everybody else.

And here I thought Canadians were supposed to be nice.

It's not Canada's fault that our superior intellect brought us further justice

What's so intellectual about whining about a few dollars until Sony gave Canada even more free stuff? I mean, honestly, it isn't as if the Welcome Back package was skimpy. It's plain greedy to keep pushing for more.

    Entirely serious for a moment:

What entitles Canada to more compensation? I'm being dead serious. I'm using Wikipedia here, so if any of these details are off, feel free to let me know.

The outage lasted for 24 days. That isn't even an entire month, and I highly doubt anybody uses their PS3 as their exclusive way of using services such as Netflix. If that $8 was considered a legitimate reason to push for compensation, then I have to wonder just how petty a person can be. The outage already had cost Sony $171 million dollars, as well as the cost of all of the free items that would normally cost money from the Welcome Back package. The attack itself could have happened to absolutely any network. Sony was unfortunately the target, and even if their security was top tier, I'm sure people would have found a way to break through if they wanted in that badly. No credit card information was actually found to have been used in a malicious manner after the attack was made meaning that even if CC info was taken, it wasn't used against the victims.

All in all, this is fairly ridiculous. Nobody is entitled to more. Or would they rather PSN came back on in an entirely compromised fashion a few days after the attack just so they could sit on their asses and watch Arrested Development?

This is also serious not attempting to be a troll or anything.

Why do you care so much? I'm just curious.

This is only a result of a Canadian class-action lawsuit, and this is the proposed settlement. It hasn't been approved yet, but this is a claim form provided in case that happens (as the verdict has already been reached). If you really need details about the lawsuit, check out this lengthy, detailed PDF covering the situation. Sony still denies that they're at fault.

Non of the option is good for me , if they pushed the lawsuit it was gonna be a massacre on Sony's part but what they did here is just a shitty compensation.

What would have happened if Apple got screwed over identity theft they would be shitting themselves by now LOL
