Hello, my 3DS recently got the BSoD. The home screen menu music plays, but both screens remain off. I searched the internet and saw the possible fixes so I decided to give it a try.

However, no matter what I try I can't figure out what the problem is. I've forced the 3ds to update and seeing how the screens came on during that update it led me to believe that maybe it was a home screen corruption or something. I tried a new SD card to see if it worked. It didn't. I tried booting it up without an SD card and it's been doing the same. I've removed the battery and put it in again to see if that worked, nothing. I've opened the 3DS to the motherboard to see if it was a loose connection but I've seen nothing out of place.

Is there a possible fix that I'm missing?

((I can't send it to Nintendo for repair because it's $90 I don't have right now.))

Do you see the Nintendo3DS logo when you turn on the system?

It seems you already tried booting into recovery mode (R+L+A+(D-PAD)-UP while booting), connected to WiFi, and updating the system. I assume this is where the screens worked perfectly for you?

Removed the battery while the 3DS is on?

You have tried turning off/on 3D, right?

Turn on 3DS, close the hinge (sleep mode) and open it back up?

When you have the 3DS on, you can hear the system music, right? What happens if you close the system? Do you still hear music? There might be an issue with the switch that activates sleep mode.

Have you turned on the system, seen black screens, then place a magnet over the d-pad, wait a few seconds, then remove it? (this activates sleep mode and if sleep mode is causing the issue, this might help).

You went here https://www.nintendo.com/consumer/repair/repair_redirect.jsp?sys=3ds&lang=en&sym=CWBLCKBLNKSCRN and entered all of the information, mentioned what the problem was, talked to Nintendo, and was told it would be $90 to repair it? Odd since this is a known defect with 3DS and your 3DS is a newer model.

If you've never modified the system at all (A9LH, B9S, etc) and you're still having issues, it could be one of a million things, including an actual hardware defect. There's even one report of someone taking apart their system, disconnecting the WiFi module, waiting 30 seconds, then reconnecting it. So as to what is actually causing this, ::shrug::.

New, XL, and no.

Post Update
On August 22, 2018, gisel213 solved and provided the solution in fixing this BSoD brick.

This community has tried to solve that Black Screens of Death with working HOME Menu sound brick these past few months and nothing seems to work in fixing it. You may read/research what has been gathered so far to get up to speed, try methods presented there, or formulate new ideas to test out, although this may not be possible without having custom firmware at hand or making a NAND image dump before the brick occurred.
  1. Do you recall what year your N3DSXL was purchased?
  2. What does the back case cover say for the year?
  3. Region, firmware update was it last on, and color / special edition model?
I'm collecting information to determine if early production models were more prone to this brick (or whatever pattern can be established).

Case #12 of BSoD with Sound. Shorthanded Foot Notes [updated after post #6]:

  • New 3DS XL
  • open firmware
  • 2015 production; 2016 purchase
  • standard black model, USA region?

1. The 3DS was purchase around 2016. I don't remember what month but it was definitely 2016.
2. 2015 is the year on the back cover
3. Black 3DS, not a special edition.

1. Yes, the screens went to the update menu and it allowed me to update the system. When I reset it, the same problem occurred.
2. Yes, problem is still occurring.
3. Yes, many times.
4. Yes.
5. If I close the system, the music stops and when I open it back up the music doesn't play anymore.
6. I haven't placed a magnet over the d-pad, but I will search for one to see if that works.
7. As I was entering the information to start a repair request, it said "The serial number is associated with a device that isn't eligible for our online repair setup process." and so they were going to charge $85. I haven't called Nintendo yet because I assumed they would say the same thing.

At this point, I'm just hoping my 3DS doesn't become a paperweight.

Wow. Thanks for the info! You're awesome. Quick note, the magnet would be placed over the ABXY buttons, not the d-pad. I misspoke on that. However, since your unit goes into sleep mode when you close the system (clamshell), it probably won't be of any help.

I would call them and give that a shot. If you've never modified your system in any way, just lay it on them thick. Let the rep know that you are aware this is a widespread problem, covering all 3DS models.

Why do I recommend calling them? Many, many years ago, I had (still have) my DS Lite. I flashed flashme to it. Eventually, it succumbed to the hinge breaking: a common problem in the DSLite series. Even though my DSL was out of warranty at the time, because it was a known, wide-spread issue, Nintendo fixed it for free. They sent me a package that was basically an empty box and a return label (aka they took care of shipping both ways). When I got the system back, there was a piece of paper with the work done to it. Since I forgot to flash unflashme/noflashme, the firmware didn't pass their checks, and they ended up rewriting the proper firmware back to the system.

TL;DR: Nintendo will sometimes cover products out of warranty if they suffer from known factory defects.
