wait what type of chips does the 3ds use?
as arm7 and arm 11 are compatible. would explain some of the symbol and flashcart dumping trouble too. I wasn't really interested in the how to hack til now... (fully prepared to hard hack my 3ds with a chip mod...)

Great to see some knowledge getting out into the vast web.

Hopefully we can atleast run homebrews in the near future if the great hackers do this steadly

Don't expect it anytime soon. Maybe if Tw3ezers find something.

Cracking the encryption is gonna be hard, very hard.

+1. At the bare minimum, I'm expecting to see something by next year.

But still we check the Tempz every day in hope to find something :-P

As long as we can't RE the code or have the encryption keys we will get nowhere.

Going for speculation here

Although I certainly hope for a code (like the wii trucha bug) or implementation/usage failure (like the PS3 shared randoms) I would place my eggs in the sidechannel basket (I hold out no real hope of a bad encryption method (that awful implementation of XOR on the saves aside) unless early in the boot sequence) even as it comes to the "end user".
Likewise if they have an architecture as hinted by the info above I am not entirely sure how effective a more conventional overflow type bug might be.
Nintendo seem to have been quite slippery this time around.

I make no speculation on timeframes though.

Also I just poked around the 3dbrew site. Some nice information on it beyond what is above.

I think that's the main reason why most people come here everyday.

Err... This is really dumb and off-topic but I'm just curious. Does anyone here already know the actual capacity of an average 3DS game (or rather rom)?

Even if someone smart manages to find a way to decrypt 3DS retail games, that's still not much, because we still need an exploit to execute custom code.

In both asymmetric and symmetric encryption technologies, the headers are unencrypted. In asymmetric cryptography the header is encrypted and then another header is dumped on the front end. Not progress, it is unencrypted data.

i cant believe that nobody still even knows the technical specs of the system , isnt this a worlds first?
i mean i can not ever recall a time where a compny did not release the technical specs of a console system even before launch ,never mind after the console has ben released , i think its totally ridiculous ,i mean why is nintendo so damn paranoid?what are they hiding?what are they afraid of?
and how can they really even sell us a stytem without even telling us exatly what they are selling us ,isnt there some consumer law that forces them disclose to the consumer atleast the basic components?
its like dell or hp selling you a computer and refusing to tell you what sort of processor is in it ,or what components are inside, is this legal to do?in all countries?

it just really strikes me as odd , all other consoles in history that have come out have had the company disclose the technical specs ,even at some pint prior to the release of the console

and about the dumping method not being able to be disclosed ,why would that be , has mathieul joined the 3ds hacking scene and found the method to dump the 3ds roms?

i mean sure it could be cause they dont want ninty to close the exploit , but would you even need an exploit just to dump the rom? is that something that nintendo could even do anything about ?
or was it a commercial interest that discovered the dumping method , like a card manufacturer?
or is it just that the person that discovered it is like another math?

That is the Most grammatically incorrect post I've ever seen. And useless as well. Try to stay on topic.

I believe Wii's specs were not disclosed either.
The reason is pretty simple: they would really look bad on paper compared to other current handhelds/smartphones, probably even compared to PSP. (I recall that PSP has better vertex performance than Pica200). Many people choose gadgets solely on basis of their parameters and they wouldn't buy 3DS then.

QUOTE(totalnoob617 @ Jun 5 2011, 05:55 AM) and about the dumping method not being able to be disclosed ,why would that be
It's probably very troublesome method involving lots of wires, logic analyzer etc. - and NOT an exploit.

http://tinyurl.com/3oc3r9w - max size is 8GB
While 8GB is the theoretical maximum from information given by the manufacturer of 3DS cartridges, it was confirmed at E3 2010 that the max size AT LAUNCH is actually 2GB. Unless this has changed since then (unlikely), it is likely to take years for games to actually use the max capacity. Just like GBA and DS before it. You'll probably see some 4GB games by late 2012 or even 2013, then finally see the first few 8GB games later in life. The maximum DS cartridge at launch was 128MB. It look several years for developers to finally use a larger card (i believe the first 256MB DS game was ASH). And only late in life was a 512MB DS card finally used, only a couple of which are actually used such as Love Plus Plus and Ninokuni.

@pachura-

PSP's vertex performance is apparently theoretical, as is often the case with Sony's official specifications. From what i have heard, they gave out specs for the PS2 that indicated the system could push something like 66million polygons per second. In reality, it was about 1/6 of that number when using real-world ingame scenarios (the specs were using non-textured polygons with no effects or lighting). The PSP was said to push something around 30 million polygons per second (i don't recall the exact number), and i've heard that this too is theoretical based on pure polygons, with no textures or effects. We definitely don't know the 3DS' vertex performance as we don't even know the specific model of the Pica200 used in the 3DS. There are multiple versions of the Pica200 (it's a series of GPU's, not a single entity), and we only have specs on the oldest and first generation pica200 from way back in 2006. There are newer versions that have far greater vertex pushing power. It also depends largely on the clockrate and the resolution used as well. Resolution is key, as apparently the 2006 Pica200's vertex performance is being benchmarked whilst running at over 4000x4000 resolution! The 3DS only uses a max of 800x240, which could easily mean much greater polygon pushing than the spec sheets would indicate. No one can say though.

In other words- too much we don't know and may never know unless someone can perform proper benchmarks.

If someone manages to decrypt a 3DS game, searching for an exploit would be easier. Now we have to do it with dificult ram dumps (if those already exist)
