The thread seems to have run its course so just to add
AVG is what most people I redo computers for end up with (and are usually pleasantly surprised about the speedup when the rid themselves of norton and the like).
While I dare say such an action is also followed up with an attempt to beat some common sense into people which actually tends to stick it works OK for me when I pull risky stuff.
While it does not do for me (and a good chunk of people I know) limited access accounts (versus full admin) are a fairly good way of slowing the spread of stuff.

Firewall: hardware (check your router or have a look at some of the prepacked linux distros) or comodo, I had some memory leak issues and the occasional need for a restart with the free zonealarm but that was not that bad either.

Spyware: Spybot, Adaware and A squared/A2 for some manual detection.

Anti adware: Ad-aware 2007 (not too sure how good it is, but its free)

I'll second Spybot Search and Destroy for anti-spyware.

I've been using it for 2ish years and it always works a charm when crap manages to wriggle itself into my computer (sometimes myself to blame).

With antispyware, two is always better than one. Spybot + Ad-aware, and I guess ESET's built in spyware definitions would count for a third.

I've gone through numerous anti-viruses, such as AVG free, Norton, Kaspersky, Avast, NOD32, etc... the ones that most impressed me were Kaspersky and NOD32, which I am currently using.

AVG free is a pretty decent AV though, considering its free, have yet to try out Comodo...

Avira does have a small lead as far as the actual detections go, but the program itself is pretty sub-par. This is quite apparent when you try to compare it to a much more lightweight and well-designed application like Nod32.

Furthermore, for what its worth, its quite an eye-sore and the menu layout is a bit disorganized.

Well I would like to have a program that catches more viruses than a pretty GUI.

I think a hit of 2% is worth the improvement in speed, memory footprint, CPU utilization, and aesthetics.

This is of course not even taking into account that ESET also has a quite secure and lightweight firewall, and spyware detections.

Avira Antivirus has a firewall and spyware detection also bundled if you buy it. NOD32 doesn't have a free version tho.

Kaspersky Internet Security is the most awesome internet security suite.
NOD32 for just antivirus, ZoneAlarm for just firewall (not the security suites for these, they kind suck)

You should be using a hardware firewall as your main defense, with a software firewall as possibly a second line. Thats why I like the ESET firewall, not as comprehensive as something like ZoneAlarm, but ZoneAlarm is much too bloated for what it should be used for.
