Hacking NDSI XL and R4 card problems, please help!

My son has a nintendo dsi XL and has been using the R4 cards that have hundreds of games on them. He is not very happy with me as since I "did him the favour" of connecting him to the internet, and thus accepting a general update to the machine in the process, he hasn't been able to play his games on the R4 cards.
I understand it might be possible to buy a new card to house the little memory card from inside? any help appreciated please

You can try to update the existing one, but you will need a different DS model in order to run the update... so buying a new one might be better.
