I downloaded the most recent Narctool but when i click on it a black command prompt opens up for a split second and then disappears. i've looked around and other people have had this problem as well but nobody ever seems to actually help them...is there a solution, or another way to extract NARC files simply?

    EDIT: I used dsbuff.

narctool is a console application. You do not open it by double clicking it, you open via text commands through the Command Prompt (Start->All Programs->Accessories->Command Prompt). If you don't understand how to use the command prompt, google it.

you'd think they'd tell you how to open a program when they tell you how to use it...a simple "Note: open this program with the command prompt" would suffice [IMG]

I'm having no problems at all with dsbuff though, so I might as well just stick with it. Thanks though!

I'd seriously recommend the Tihaxa version of Tahaxan, since it can view and extract NARC contents on-the-fly, rather than slowly doing it with stuff like Narctool. Works with D/P/P too! [IMG]

    http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/dll-files.shtml?mfc71u

Stick it either in the same directory as the exe file or wherever DLL files you want everything to see sit (varies according to version of windows and how you view computer security, personally I would just stick it in the same directory).

As for CARC to NARC if memory serves it was the whole thing that was compressed rather than subsections (which would still be easy) and then with a BIOS compatible compression- anything that can uncompress that should work.

Crystaltile2 has support for compression searching and extraction as well as quite good file system level detection (it will tell you when you parse the DS file system inside the program if it thinks the file is compressed and offer decompression options).

A guide to compression including the long standing tool “GBAcrusher” (great for GBA and DS BIOS compatible compression) can be found http://members.iinet.net.au/~freeaxs/gbacomp/

nsbmdtool is not the best 3d tool out there.
Try http://www.romhacking.net/forum/index.php/topic,8407.html (link in the OP's signature, note it is a java program so you will need some java on your machine) although what you just said makes it seem as though it extracted wrongly (BMD0 is the magic stamp).

im glad someone else is looking for obj files too. I've learned that the obj files should be .brres files. So i tried changing the name of the course name from course_name.carc to course_name.brres. Still didn't work. szs modifier said the file was incompatible.

Of course they are incompatible, they are ds and wii games have totally different file structures, diff compression methods etc. You can't get .obj files from a ds game, you can only get the mdl0 file.
