Afaik, Gateway is the only way to backup your NAND so yes, you'll need to delete your CN save and scan the Gateway QR (then do the same again to get Ninjhax back up and running).

Have you looked into ReiNAND? That's what I'm currently using. It has emunand support (upto 9.5 for N3DS), plus the latest build can actually boot using the MSET exploit, so no need to carry a copy of Cubic Ninja.

Alright thanks, this is what I'll end up doing before installing any other CIAs or anything else.

When I was deciding which route to take regarding CFW I did look into ReiNAND, but at that time it looked a little complicated and I was reading about quite a few complaints about it being unstable. Seemed like the best way to go was Pasta for now, and hold out until RX w/Pasta gets N3DS support. But maybe I'll read a little more about the latest ReiNAND release and go from there. Is three really a great chance of bricking my N3DS just installing game CIAs, and maybe a theme, to my sysNAND?

Who knows, maybe down the road I'll even end up buying a Gateway (if I can find one used for cheap) and try that. I'm thinking about doing a hardmod, just to have, maybe sometime down the road too.

If I do end up installing RieNAND instead, or Rx w/Pasta, will I have to format everything and re-install all my game CIAs? If so, can I restore my gamesaves somehow?

Sorry for all the questions guys, but thank you everyone for taking time out to give me some great answers. This community is amazing! :)

As long as you trust the source of your CIA files you should be fine. Like I said, before using ReiNAND I installed a shed-load of CIAs to my sysNAND and it was all fine.

I'm not sure about Rx/Pasta, but when I set up my an emuNAND (for use with ReiNAND) it made an exact copy of my sysNAND; installed CIAs/gamesaves etc were available on the emuNAND. From here I was able to format my sysNAND back to factory defaults and still retain all my games/saves in an emuNAND.

Note: you want to remove the SD card before formatting SysNAND when doing this, otherwise it'll erase that data from your SD! (IIRC)

Hey guys, another update:

I ended up finally backing up my NAND using gateway launcher, and then re-installed ninjhax, got pasta back up and running no problem.

I decided to try using updated Pasta beta 7 to try and use firmlaunch, and it wouldn't work. I copied the firm.bin (downloaded from some iso site) straight to pastaCFW folder, and when running with firmlaunch enabled, it would freeze.

I downloaded the pasta beta 7 RTU (again from same iso site) and tried running that, with the same result. I looked up my error that ends with screen saying Jump! and freezing on the pasta threads, but can't seem to find an answer. Seems like everyone is abandoning pasta....

I copied my original pasta files back over, and back up and running in 9.0

I just want to be able to play Xenoblade and other higher firmware games, any idea when RxTools will support N3DS emunand and have some kind of instructions for setting it up on N3DS?

Or should I just try ReiNAND instead?

Just looking for some opinions, thanks again everyone!! :)

If you want, you can follow my guide to setup Reinand with Mset exploit (profile launching) & emunand.

https://gbatemp.net/threads/tutorial-setting-up-reinand-cfw-from-scratch.394806/

Once you've setup Reinand, you can update the firmware to 9.5.0-23(U) by downloading the update from - google: That 3ds site with isos - & installing it with Devmenu.

Pasta is a cfw solely for Sysnand. You're better off sticking with Emunand cfw.

Hello again guys! I've finally decided to update my US 9.0 N3DS using Ninjxax 1 + Pasta to ReiNand emuNAND, and then update the emuNAND to 9.5. With all the tutorials around, that shouldn't be an issue.. I've decided to skip MSET entry all together and just keep using Ninjhax 1 to launch it. Was considering RxTools but from what I read it's still unstable/complicated for N3DS, and Cakes just seems to intimidate me for some reason... Anyways, now I have another question.

I've been searching all over this site, and I cant seem to find what I'm looking for.

Say once I create an emunand, get ReiNAND installed, and then update my emuNAND to 9.5, along with using FreeMultiPatcher, what would I have to do to play Custom Virtual Console game played/installed as CIAs? I.E. - custom Genesis Sonic The Hedgehog 3, Super Mario 3, Super Mario Advance 2, and many other both original and custom VC/DSi games that already exist as CIA's (on some other site used for maybe EYE-SO's or something I think?? )

I remember reading something about a patched AGB_FIRM but for the life of me (using search) I can't find a clear-cut answer.

In ReiNAND, can these CIA's be installed an played on Rei's emuNAND (since I plan on un-linking both NANDs) ? Does it have to be in sysNAND only? Must they be linked?

The only info I could find had to do with Gateway, which I don't own :(

If there's a tutorial for this specifically for ReiNAND, or one that covers all CFW, I apologize in advance, could you please point me in the correct direction?

I really just want to be able to get these games on here, which I hope can be done. Thank you very much for all of your continued help. This community is amazing guys! :)

@SylverReZ if you could find a v5 DS ML you would have the best of both worlds since the v5 units had the same backlight brightness levels as the DS Lite unlockable with flashme

A woman with no arms and no legs was sitting on a beach. A man comes along and the woman says, "I've never been hugged before." So the man feels bad and hugs her. She says "Well i've also never been kissed before." So he gives her a kiss on the cheek. She says "Well I've also never been fucked before." So the man picks her up, and throws her in the ocean and says "Now you're fucked."

anyways, we need to re-normalize physical media

if i didn't want my games to be permanent, then i'd rent them

Agreed, that why I try to buy all my games on disc, Xbox anyways. Switch games (which I pirate tbh) don't matter much, I stay offline 24/7 anyways.

    I don't pirate them, I Use Them :mellow:. Like I do @BigOnYa 's couch :tpi::evil::rofl2:

@BakerMan - you can still "own" digital media, arguably easier and better than physical since you can make copies and backups, as much as you like.

    The issue is DRM
  • cearp @ cearp:
You can buy drm free games / music / ebooks, and if you keep backups of your data (like documents and family photos etc), then you shouldn't lose the game. but with a disk, your toddler could put it in the toaster and there goes your $60

    :rofl2:
  • cearp @ cearp:
still, I agree physical media is nice to have. just pointing out the issue is drm
  • rqkaiju2 @ rqkaiju2:
i like physical media because it actually feels like you own it. thats why i plan on burning music to cds
  • cearp @ cearp:
It's nice to not have to have a lot of physical things though, saves space
