And again, another thread where you discuss the worst game translations on a specific platform!
These two consoles have spawned loads of games, which unfortunately do include bad titles. So what are the worst Playstation 1 and 2 games in terms of script?

Mega Man X6 comes to mind. Horribly rushed in all areas, translation included. Final Fantasy 7 was also a noticeable downgrade compared to the translation from 6. The Spanish version was even worse. Wild Arms 2 is infamous for the poor translation, too.

Xenogears can read pretty awkwardly sometimes, with many typical Japanese anime writting "mannerisms" translated directly to a language that doesn't work with such lines. Suikoden II also suffers from a number of machine translation, like "Circlet" being "Circuret". The Spanish version also had a disappointing translation.

FF Tactics was another victim of this, Final Fantasy 5's first official english script has been always criticised, specially compared to the SNES fan translation (and also where the famous "Yburn" for Wyvern comes from) and Legend of Dragoon had quite the number of blunders too.

Resident the Evil trilogy on PS1 also has very cheesy scripts because they english voice actors were overseen by Japanese directors. But I'm not complaining, I wouldn't change them for anything, these translations are REALLY powerful, specially against living things.

For PS2... I don't remember many terrible translations, but there were super dry translations, I suppose.

Now of course, the quality of the translations and the quality of the games are different things for the most part, most of the games mentioned I find good, just unfortunate to have such translations.

As for FF7 and Xenogears, we have respectively a fan retranslation from the PC version of the game and an hack named "Xenogears 2.0", while for Final Fantasy Tactics, it's a good thing Square Enix decided to retranslate the whole script from Japanese when remastering the game to PSP. In fact when a group translated this game into my language, they used the new script as base!

Final Fantasy Tactics also had the PSP translation reworked into the PS1 version with the Complete project, with the newest version being a fork of it called FFT Prime.

And yeah, I've been wanting to play the PS1 version of FF7 with the retranslation, it's great to have.

i thought everybody knew cocktails are like 75% ice
  • Veho @ Veho:
    Yeah but not like this.
  • Veho @ Veho:
It's not like they're complaining that their Slurpee is 99% ice or something, but if the cocktail calls for "shot of vodka, shot of vermouth, shot of gin, shot of Campari, three shots of juice, squirt of lemon" and ends up being a thimbleful of booze, that's a problem.
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
the funny thing is cocktails in norway are only allowed to have 1 20ml shot of booze
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    so..... yeah
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
we're used to only having a thimbleful of booze
  • Veho @ Veho:
    Booo.
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
same thing if you want whisky on the rocks or something, you can't get a double
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
but you could buy as many shots of whisky (or anything else) as you want and ask for a glass of ice and pour them in
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    it's dumb
  • Veho @ Veho:
    Maybe.

There was a comparison of the number of Ibuprofen poisonings before and after they limited the maximum dosage per box or per pill (i'll look that up). No limit on the number of boxes you can still buy as many as you want, so people argued it was pointless.
  • Veho @ Veho:
But the number of (accidental) poisonings dropped because drinking an entire package of ibuprofen pills went from "I need a new liver" to "I need a new box of Ibuprofen".
  • Veho @ Veho:
Here we have ketoprofen that used to be prescription-only because of the risk of toxic dosages, but then they halved the dose per pill and sell them in bottles of six pills apiece instead of twenty and it doesn't need a prescription any more. Yes you can buy more than one bottle but people simply don't.

Usually accidentally overdose of ibuprofen here is from people taking like cold medicine then ibuprofen for a headache and the combination is over what they need
