Tutorial Modify ANY Wii 4.3 & below

I appreciate the "one word at a time" reminder.

I also know the reason why it is necessary to reinstall HBC in the "modify 4.2" section.

However, there is still one thing I don't know the reason :

Why is it necessary to reinstall Bootmii in the modify 4.2 section ?

Would you please explain ?

fixing to get started on the mod.......after looking through I have ONE more question. It says:

Install either cIOS249-v14.wad or cIOS249-v15.wad
Install either cIOS250-v14.wad or cIOS250-v15.wad

does it matter which one? My primary use for softmodding will be for usb loading.
and I take it you should use both v14's or both v15's, and not mix match?

What preloader would you guys recommend for a version 4.2 wii?

Excellent question AFNUKE. I ran into this same dilemma as well 2 days ago when I did the mod.
I just rolled the dice and installed both of the v15.wad files but I had a bad gut felling that I shouldn't have to be just guessing. (that's what leads to bricks)

Would love to hear from someone more knowledgeable what criteria a person is to use to determine whether to install v14 or v15.

Maybe that is something that could be clarified in the guide by xzxero.

I must admit the rest of the guide was PERFECT though. That was the only place I had a concern as I knew nothing about the wii prior to reading the guide. I was a total newwwbie. The amount I have learnt in the last 2 days is quite amazing. Everyone here seem to be quite friendly and willing to help teach us newbies.
Hopefully we will be able to give back and help teach the new groups of newbies that will surely come around after Christmas

i soft modded my wii probably 4 months ago following guides from this site. i haven't updated anything since then but i want to now. if i were up follow all the steps starting from "Update to 4.2" would i run into any problems since i already have older files on my wii?
guide seems really simple and great i just dont want to mess anything up since i already have some files on the wii, thanks

Umm, I just tried to install HBC and it comes with an error.

Error: failed to install haxx (-2)

Not sure what to do now

Are you saying the hackmii installer gives you that error, make sure you install from the little SD icon, and not the Wii settings. Edit I meant storage management.

I am installing from the SD menu, everything loads fine it says I cant install BootMii as Boot2, however the first step in the tutorial is to install HBC, I click it and it gives me the error.

made it through the entire process.........but now system menu only shows 4.2 at the bottom right side and nothing but black screen.

you have an outdated package, but they are the same WAD's just renamed.

okay.....system menu goes to black screen and just shows 4.2.
its set to auto to hbc which seems to work fine, but if I exit to system menu I still get black screen. If I exit to bootmii from HBC I get a black screen with drive leds flashing.
But I can press reset and enter priiloader, which seems to be fuctional.

would this be a banner brick?

you have enabled a system menu hack from priiloader that does that
disable it

I do like how you keep adding every detail possible to the package it really does help.

Thanks, you are the MAN!! Guide went great, I just enabled priiloader to let me move the channel, block updates, and copy protection on saves.
Dont know which one it was, but it fixed it after I left them all disabled. Ive got to read up on priiloader

I used your guide mostly because I knew you would help if I screwed it up...which I did

that's theory only tho, cuz none of these hacks mentioned work...i wonder if it's cuz i use memorex dvd+r instead of verbatim dvd-r?


The hacks work make sure that you don't have one of those games that are quirky, or you record to DVD-R. I have not found one DVD+R to work, and I have a lot of coasters now. I saw you on the forum so I thought I would throw this out.
