I already posted this question on wiihacks.com , but I'm not sure anyone would reply so here it goes again..

I was reading somewhere that said something to the extent of depending on your chipset will determine if you will be able to play back up dvds or not. Anyway I checked my chipset via wiidrives.com and it seems I have a GC2R-D2A or a GC2-DMS. Mind you, my Wii is Japanese and it was produced it on 06. I'm also running on a 4.3 system. I'm assuming that since I don't have a new chipset, if I get a modchip I can burn and play backup Japanese version wii games but not American or Pal games, right b/c of the update...?..if anybody with advice about this could reply I would be grateful.

well b/c in order to soft mod I would need to get either the import edtions of Super Smash Bros, Yu-Gi-Vah or Lego Indiana Jones since my wii is Japanese running on 4.3..The cheapest I see for the import edition of Super Smash Bros is like $70 and the other 2 I can't find any japanese editions of..so I don't really have a choice..that's why I was just going to get a solderless modchip and work it out from there..

Yes you can use a chip on your Wii, but you would still need Japanese games unless you softmod it. With a chip you can softmod it with copies of the games you mention but they still need to be Japanese region.

If your drive can read burned DVD-Rs, you can do that..
Update 4.2 removed regionfree for old modchips so most people downgrade using Modmii to Systemmenu 4.1 to get it back.

Actually you could probably install the chip and maybe use dop-mii to change the region of he wii. I would not downgrade the Wii I see no point in doing that anymore.

I have never used dop-mii to change the region of a wii and i only brought it up as a possible suggestion and if the chip you get is not region free.

So did you ever find the chip you are gonna get?

I dont understand why people actually downgrade to restore the region free ability of their modchip??.

If u install Priiloader, Region free everything, hey presto your modchip has its region free ability resotred on 4.3, unless im missing something and some ppl cant install priiloader?

well I was thinking about getting a drivekey..I heard they're really good...also I don't think I could get priiloader since Hombrew is out of the question for me(this is the very reason why I'm getting a chip..I don't have the tools to install hombrew, like I said before, I cannot get any of those 3 games to install it)...I already have a ton of burned games that are American versions..but ever since I accidentally updated my Wii(my understanding of Japanese isn't as strong as it should be)..none of them work (My wii was softmodded on 4.2..with homebrew and all that other good stuff)>>..so hopefully If I get this modchip, the little Japanese games that I did burn should work again..

Like I wrote earlier, after you install a modchip you can use a copy of one of the exploitable games to softmod your Wii. No need for an original. Just search the internet
