I'm trying to find the best way to access my home desktop for games while I'm away for a few months. Most of the streaming services like steam seem to only work when connected on the same network. My laptop isn't powerful enough to play the games by itself. Suggestions?

You'll need a VPN to stream Steam games etc over the internet. I set one up on my Asus router (which was really easy by the way) and it works great, but you do need a fast upload speed at home and a similarly matched download speed wherever you are for the best results.
The VPN should be on your home connection so that you're not going through a server in a different location, increasing ping and input lag.

I set my Steam to the highest bitrate (30mbps) since that's my upload speed, but I haven't seen it go much above 15, so if your upload speed is at least 20mbps (best to leave some room so you don't get lag spikes whenever something on your PC decides to do its thing) it should work great. I haven't tried lower bitrates much, but I think 10mbps should work well for 1080p as well. Anything lower and you might notice quality loss in certain situations, still completely playable though.

I know about VPN, but not sure about how to go about that. Where should I get one or can I set it up myself? Thank

You should set it up on your home connection so it's not going through a 3rd party server increasing your ping and input lag.
Maybe your router has support for it, otherwise Windows has it built in and you can find guides online on how to enable it.
