on the server issue, games like second life run on hundreds if not thousands of servers... so distribution wouldn't be a problem, at least from a do-ability standpoint.

but, i think this is just showing why all mmos have those large subs....

Would it seriously cause that much stress on the game server if 3D was used? Say, low poly count models and low-def textures? Servers would be a pain in the arse though, unless frequent donations could be thrown in to host something like this.

Not to mention you'd need Writers, Programmers, Artists, Musicians, etc. Would the DevKit even support a game this big? haha.

I think we'll see how PSZ turns out, and that's not even an MMO, but it might be the closest to get an idea of one.

EDIT: Just throwing this out there, but Legion is a 3D isometric shooter that uses wifi, so yeah. What if graphics were like that?

Ok I'm going to step back and say it again. We aren't talking top of the line extreme graphics here. There are thousands upon thousands of free open source sprites, music, gfx, animations available for a simple MMORPG CONCEPT. IMO starting small would be the best thing to do - Just like how it started on PC (as someone said earlier with roguelikes).

Just take a look at the playerworlds example I posted above and you will see how simple of a concept an MMORPG (or even an MORPG, without the massive) can be! Stop looking at *thousands upon thousands of people with 3D graphics - you've been warped by the modern perception of an MMORPG.

Oh I have nothing wrong with 2D, I was just asking people who know how to program this stuff and the limitations if a 3D project like this would be going overboard. I do 3D graphics and such, but I don't program, so I don't know the limits on poly counts and such.

@CPhantom you do not have to send 3d data, merely coordinate data which would not be that far off sprite data.
I have to agree though, why do we need 3d?

Do we? or is that what developers think?

...wait... they aren't giving us any of them.

(Seriously unimpressed with any and all DS titles so far: Playing EarthBound/ChronoTrigger/FF2/3 on snemulds)

Have any of you guys looked at the secrets of mirage example yet? The graphics are so damn simple - and it's 16x16 coordinates - that sure as hell couldn't hurt server side? :S

i know i have nothing against (good) 2d graphics, the best mmo's I have ever played were 2d

and, it won't add much load on the server, its just another coordinate to track.

Lol now if we can only motivate someone to make it. Sure I could make a good snake game or tic tac toe... but this is waaay outta my league. Beyond those I'm an extremely well developed idea guy. Maybe I should start a donation fund or something.

I acctualy really liked soma bringer due to the great story line not the grpahics, which were 2D. Now only if they made that multiplayer on wifi it worked pretty well

Guess I've failed to inspire anyone to try this huh?

why don't you go try it yourself, not to sit and wait for others to accomplish what you want?
What would inspire us is prove that you can help with the coding. If you can't, then that's no luck for you.
Or what you can do is actually PAY for the server, and you'll need to pay much more for more space as more players start to play.
Then you have to be able to maintain the server, check who is cheating in the game, and you'll have to do much more.
If that is impossible for you, then this counts as a "request", which is quite often turned down.

it's more likely to see an MMORPG or massive online game for the DSi, not the DS...

mainly because the DSi will have wifi speeds at 5x plus that of the DS, which will be alot nicer for online games... a hella lot less lag!

If the DSi had and MMORPG I would consider buying it...

Uhh I already hire out a server with quad core, 16gb ram, 100mb ded. line etc. Besides if it would be like the examples I've posted you don't need that much to host it. All a server really has to do is track coordinates, log everything in a database and check for cheaters like you say - which wouldn't be a big issue when it's on a DS...

You want a DS MMORPG. (this will not happen, ever. Hardware limits are not some fictional creature, they exist.)
You want a homebrew DS MMORPG (are you serious? what is your problem?)

Roguelikes don't work for MMO due to sync issues that arise from their gameplay.
This leaves two options; MUD and other.

Making a MUD is impossible. (just a second, allow me to put on my glasses of thoughtful thinking and selective perception) Somebody should make a DS MUD, it's totally possible.

Anything besides MUD's? Buy a laptop. Wham! Portable MMOWHATEVER! WITH WIFI!

I don't get what you are talking about.
He's not talking about an uber 1337 3-D OMG Final Fantasy FTW game,
if a really basic MMORPG was needed to be made, and if the only information a player needs from the server is the coordinates of another, MANY people can play together.

What KIND of mmorpg does he want, concretely. Even when that has been decided upon there's the issue of nobody-is-going-to-make-it.
Sure, it's a novel idea, but it's kinda pointless. (kinda as in give me back the time I spent reading this thread)
