Shigeru Miyamoto has described the upcoming Super Mario 3DS as a cross between Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario 64, and said that the eagerly anticipated title will be out this year.

Speaking in London today, Miyamoto told us: “It’s a combination of Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario on N64. It won’t convey the message if I talk to you today, but if you play it at E3 that will give you more understanding of what I’m talking about.”

The man who created Mario also talked up the effect 3DS’s unique capabilities would have on gameplay, saying: “For example, the floors floating in space: in 2D it’s difficult to judge the distance, but in 3D it’s really easy.”

Most important of all was Miyamoto’s promise that the game is “completely original, and coming this year.”

Super Mario 3DS was announced by Nintendo president Satoru Iwata during his keynote address at GDC last month. All that was shown were four screenshots and a logo, with the eager-eyed spotting a tail attached to the letter O in Mario.

The tail also featured on the title screen of 1988 NES classic Super Mario Bros 3, prompting speculation that Super Mario 3DS would see the return of the much-loved raccoon suit.

“The tail you mentioned on the logo – it’s what you think it is,” Miyamoto said. “You probably know what’s going to happen using that character.”

Roll on E3, then. This year’s conference runs from June 7 to 9 at the Los Angeles Convention Center. Nintendo is yet to announce the date of its annual E3 press conference.

Seems so odd to have a new entry in the proper Mario series so soon after Galaxy 2, I hope it can live up to the lineage.

A cross between 64 and Galaxy...I loved both of those games

. Though I am curious to seeing how the Raccoon suit will be used in 3D environments, since all we've ever had in the 3D games was the ability to Glide. Anyway, I've run short on platformers lately and am looking forward to this.

omg, Nintendo's finally getting their heads out of their asses and making what the fans want?!

When could we glide? Do you mean the flying hat from 64?

It's rather odd, actually. I remember Miyamoto saying he does hwhat he wants and not what the fans want and that's the games are good. I don't remember where I read that, but it can definitely be found via Google.

omg, Nintendo making quality games?

Oh, wait. That'll never happen.
For someone who calls himself 'GBATemp's Shiny Zigzagoon™', I'm surprised you forgot that Nintendo made Pokemon.

Interesting title for me, but the game I really want so bad is Mario Kart 3DS. I guess this news means that we won't see Mario Kart 3DS in 2011 :/

Btw Chaz, awesome sig you have, really well made!

It just occurred to me... where's Super Mario Sunshine 3D?!

Sometimes fans don`t know what they want til Nintendo shows them: see Galaxy

I`m quite happy to see them bringing back some things from SMB3 or SM64. Even though I love SMG2 (most definitely one of the best games of all time imo) I somehow missed the HUB-World. I really enjoyed the HUB-Worlds of SM64 and SMS very much and I hope they`ll bring something similar to that back.

Also nice to see them bringing back the Tanookie-Suit. I really hope they`ll put the Penguin-Suit from SNMBWii in as well. From all the new powerups of the latest games I think the Penguin-Suit is the best!

Oh, and I hope they don`t rush it. Mario games always have these wow-effects in doing something in a similar context from other games in the genre but it just feels completely new and I hope they accomplish that with SM3D as well...

I was just pointing out the sarcasm in your post. Nintendo (I think) has a slogan that says that they make what the fans want.

They're combining a game I hate (Galaxy) with my most-loved game of all time (SM64).
The world as we know it will end

It'll probably take the physics from SM64, the creativity from Galaxy, the fast-pace of SMB3, and make the best game known to all man kind.

If I'm honest...I don't know how this is going to work out

For people that liked Galaxy then it will be miracles.
But how do I look at this? As my hated game being improved by my loved game, or as my loved game being ruined by my hated game?

Well I didn't initially like Galaxy either. Actually, I hated it, sold it, waited 2 years, downloaded it, and then loved it...that said, I still hate Twilight Princess and have no idea why, tried the same formula, too.

Anyway, my point is maybe you should try what I did, it might work.

Its going to launch right against the NGP.

Good luck Sony!
I'm not going to lie, but this will cause a rather mutual relationship between Sony and Nintendo's sales. Think about it, there are a lot of gamers (usually casual) who don't know about new systems and games. Now say one gamer were to walk in with no knowledge of the NGP but they did have full knowledge of SM3DS, and inside the store they see the NGP and buy it, and the same story for someone who had known about the NGP and not SM3DS. It's not guaranteed, but it happens.

Well, the one that bought the NGP is about to be disappointed.

With a touch pad, a touch screen, 2 analog sticks and more than 10 face buttons, the NGP is going to be more like a Bop-It and less like a handheld console.

I didn't think it was humanly possible to hate Galaxy more then Sunshine considering how absolutely dire the latter was. I like the original SM Galaxy, didn't play much of SM Galaxy 2 because I got bored with it as it lacked much originality and felt far too much like the original for me. Still Super Mario 64 is one of the greatest games ever and some of the elements will probably be merged with some of the elements from Galaxy for a new experience. I hope we get a more platformed based game that is focused around Bowser and castle running or something as opposed to space levels and flying which caused me some head aches on a few occasions.
