I know it can be argued, but I prefer the simplicity of the 2D, where you can build a house very easily or a shelter (from mobs) in seconds. Unfortunately both games suffer from rampant abuse of dynamite.

So the 3D doesn't limit it, you simply prefer the simplicity 2D provides. The 3D makes the game more complex, and thus less enjoyable for you.

Frankly I think the biggest thing holding MC back is the world height restrictions. In minecraft it takes like 30 seconds to go for surface to the bottom of the map. Terraria, it takes god damn forever. The map is IMMENSE.
But of course, MC has always been more of a creativity hub, where as Terraria appeals more to adventuring/exploration.

I was making some sort of big image in photoshop about the differences between Minecraft and Terraria, but never finished it. This was months ago, long before the big 1.1 update.
I'll have to dig it up in a bit and post some of the observations I made. Usually, Terraria's implementations were better thought out and had better execution too.

But the core of it is that Minecraft is much better for building and construction whilst Terraria is better for exploration, combat and progression.
After you get your first few diamonds in Minecraft, it's all about obtaining resources towards your same old goals all the time.

Here's a freebie, Minecraft's mob spawners are stuck in place and can't be removed or easily made use of. Terraria has special statues that, with wiring, can spawn many kinds of enemies or even items making for an unlimited resource of specific things, like gel, glowsticks, bombs, goldfish, recovery hearts and stars.

Terraria's multiplayer is more centered around playing with your buddies, usually in a LAN party way or over the net with two-three friends over the internet.
The reason why you don't have to pay a SHITLOAD for the game is because you're not paying for any OFFICIAL dedicated servers to play on. (Although, they do exist, but are not exactly feasible since the maps generated, even on large, are pretty small compared to minecraft.)

Minecraft, well, is the complete opposite.

If we have to compare and make the two compete, then I say Minecraft. I love adventure and Minecraft is loaded with it.

Terraria has much better farming and I really love the way that the NPC's come in, also I feel a love for terraria because I spent ages trying to get enough jungle seeds to get the zelda costume

Oh, that's what the statues are for is it? I was wondering about them.
I've been collecting any that I find but I had no idea that they did anything other than look pretty.
Do the Armour, Woman and Angel statues spawn anything?

Nope.

While Minecraft to me is WAY over hyped its still a pretty good game, unfortunately its sandbox is very limited (if any of you own Blockland or Gmod you'll know what I mean) to the point that simple things like opening two doors at once, becomes something that requires large amounts of practice or knowledge in basic circuitry. Leaving only the adventure and combat which is still being worked on and are really more oriented to realistic combat (like a surival thing, you have to work long and hard for a weapons that will really allow you to venture out to areas like the nether or end.) . Terraira to me is even more limited in sandbox then minecraft (seeing how even massive castles look like a 8 year olds drawing) but its combat and arsenal are more reminiscent of the good ol days, playing mega man or castlvainia (not gameplay wise but how strong you are in comparison to your enemies) by giving you more then just 5 or 6 weapons and allowing you to have a flexible style. In other words Minecraft is clearly going for a SURVIVAL-LIKE EXPERIENCE (Its game mode for god sake.) where you explore your world and build up your empire from scratch by using your wit and luck giving you basically as much freedom as you feel you can have (think small, you get small). Terraira is going for a ARPG-LIKE EXPERIENCE, You progress and get stronger till you become nearly invincible, offering a wide range of weapons and magic that are kind of unlocked as you go on (Guns, Bombs, and other items arent obtainable till you cleared a certain goal and you cant get certain types of magic without beating bosses/strong enemies) in other words, the game may never end but sooner or later it doesnt matter because you basically turn into god.

Both are fun in thier own ways if you like GTA's Gameplay style then you'll like Terraira, But if you like true survival, where you have to last and explore and fight and build all at the same time then you'll like Minecraft.
