Gaming MGS 2 or MGS 3?

Okay, anyone who has been keeping up with the latest Vita news know that Sony will give you $20 for your Vita's serial number. I'm about to get $20 and my latest Vita game. I was wondering which one these MGS do you guys think I should get since I did not play either one of them. I only played one MGS game and that was Twin Snakes on Gamecube.

Hideo Kojima basically made MGS2 to piss off the series' fanbase. MGS3 was pretty obviously designed to be the series' swansong.

So yeah, go with MGS3.

Agreed. I love MGS2 only because it was the first game in the series I played, so it holds sentimental value to me. I am currently playing peace walker with a buddy, and absolutely love the big boss back story. I woud go with MGS3, and play peace walker after. Portable Ops is cool if your an avid fan of the series as i am, but its completely meaningless to the franchise as a whole IMHO

MGS2 is really fucking good (screw the haters), the game is genius. But MGS3 is the masterpiece.

Both games are great, each for their own reasons. I find MGS2's setting to be more fitting considering the previous MGS game... that said, some of Raiden's "quirks" often "spoil" the experience, not to mention that MGS was primarily about sneaking wheras MGS2 sometimes completely forgets about that and starts being a game about doing cartwheels and acrobatics on broken bridges...

...that said, MGS3 overcomplicates certain concepts. It's great that I have influence over my Camo index, it's great that I can disguise myself, it's great that I get to manage my hunger level and that I have to hunt for food and... Ugh! All of a sudden, I have to do a whole lot of things that are unrelated to the game proper. Not that it spoils the experience - I love the satisfaction of shooting some "game" in the jungle... but this isn't a hunting game.

As a Metal Gear fan, I'll recommend playing both, but I guess what I'm trying to say here is that the games are... very different from each other... which makes both titles worth playing as they're very distinct.

For the love of god, do not get MGS2.

You will quickly grow to hate everything you ever loved, especially if you are a completionist and are trying to complete the various trophy requirements. I am still stuck on the Olga boss fight on Extreme difficulty after completing all difficulties up to and including Very Hard and being rewarded with the bonus items from each on the 360 copy of MGS:HD Collection.

And unlike the 360 copy, MGS:HD on PS3, and Vita, give each respective game their own complete set of trophies, so you never have to touch that awful, bastard of an entry ever. And even though all the trophies for MGS3 could technically be attained in a single play-through, it is one game that just seems to age very well, and you certainly don't mind replaying it, whereas MGS2 is just such a hateful chore.

If you've played the original Metal Gear Solid and liked it, stay the HELL away from MGS2.

As someone that's played from the original MGS on the original PlayStation, I can tell you safely that MGS 2 was Kojima's way of trolling us, and especially in trying to shove his little boy-toy in an attempt to make us love him like he does. The re-entry of Raiden in MGS4 was a complete and utter cry for help... and the fact that he's helming MGS:R AGAIN after telling the game dev media several times he was trying to "stay out of it" just goes to show that he is trying so desperately to make us like what is quite frankly the most useless and unlikeable character in the entire franchise. Yes, he tops:

• Emma, Otacon's physically inept SISTER
• At least 50% of the villain/boss roster
• EVA's escort mission portion of MGS3
• MGS4 on Big Boss Extreme difficulty - Yes, I *expletive* went there

Raiden is gaming's equivalent of Justin Bieber, Micki Minaj, and Snooki in the same entity. For the love of a fellow player's sanity, stay the hell away from MGS2.

Metal Gear Solid 2 is a great game in that it's so perfect how much it trolls that it's beautiful and should be preserved as art.

As such, art should be left in a display case and not touched.

Get Metal Gear Solid 3.

Both games are fantastic, but of the two MGS3 is the superior because it escalates the series into the territory of EPIC

MGS2:SoL is generally talked about in a negative way because it didn't deliver what fans were expecting after the first game. It tips it's hat to it, and certainly feels much more related to MGS because of the direct link, but as a game it delivers something different by giving the player the character of Raiden - it allows us to be the inexperienced "hero" rather than portraying the player as the grizzled war veteran. SoL's setting works really well, and it also has some great set pieces and villains, but unlike the third game there are a couple of really annoying sections. It's definitely worth playing, especially for the build up to the end. (and as a side note, as someone who's not played 4 the way SoL plays out it would have been the perfect swansong for Snake, allowing him to retire gracefully).

MGS3 is, for me at least, a perfect game. I can't really fault it at all - gameplay, story, setting - all superb. It allows you to play the way you want (in terms of infiltration) and rewards you for being clever (want to weaken the guards? Blow up their munitions/food stores! Then poison them with rotten food) Rather than gush over it all i can say is that it's one of the games that shouldn't be missed by anyone, although preferably played on the big screen....

I picked up MGSHD on xbox a few months ago but never played it, now its free on ps+ :/

I'm starting with MGS3 because I'm a story whore...

I'd recommend everyone to play them in sequence if you have the chance simply because the mechanics get more complicated in the newer games. MGS2 will feel unfairly worse for you otherwise

MGS3 is the best of the series, MGS2 is great as well. If you could only pick one, MGS3 hands down. If you think you'll end up playing both at some point, start with 2. MGS3 has more game mechanics at play and MSG2 will definitely feel a step backwards.

I like 1 and 2. i like 2 more as i really enjoyed the Big Shell portion. I did not like 3 over complicating stuff, like messing around with camo all the time for one. and i liked 1 and 2 being in present time. i did enjoy creating a paradox by killing Ocelot in 3 tho and i disliked the oil fence part of mgs2.
