Hacking Lower LCD problem

I have a DS Phat which now when I turn it on has greenish colour on the lower LCD with appearing and disappearing horizontal lines of varoius colours not game releated.
After reading almost every revelant thread on ds' problems here on gbatemp it seemes to me that is something releated to my lower LCD and a replacement could solve the problem.
I'd like some confirmation before proceding with the purchase.

Before you buy a new screen, run the DS out ofo the case and press the bottom screen connectors if the screen appears normal it may be the connector, if not then it is the screen.

yes i was already doing it but my 3-wings screwdriver used for my Wii isn't samll enough to fit the ds holes.
is it possible to open it without the 3-wings?
