This is local play which requires wifi. Real ad hoc is only supported in specific switch games by entering a button combination at the title screen. Mario Kart is one of them.
ad hoc = local play, no wifi required.
the button combination/using the kip = lan, wifi required
you get it reversed
smash has local play aka ad hoc, which means connection whitout wifi, what it does not have is connection over wifi(unless you use the kip of course).

That's not an answer
People should stop saying "stay offline" when someone ask about anything related to online services

As soon as you use 90DNS, I don't know how you could be banned for playing in ad-hoc with a hacked switch

if you live in a country that DNS-poison every DNS, you can. As using 90DNS wont block anything.

basically it makes its doesnt matter what DNS you use, all hostnames will resolves to IP address as dictated by country's main DNS.

the only remedy would be to host local 90DNS, and put the host to use dnscrypt to be safe (so it wont resolve anything via country main DNS).
