Gaming Learn Japanese!

Is there a program for English speakers to learn Japanese? I know that a game is not the best teacher but I've wanted to learn for a long time and basic stuff would be fine. I know they have learn English games in Japan but is there a game like this in reverse for English speakers?

Rosetta Stone is supposedly very good. It costs money though (unless you pirate it).
I've tried it before.

I think Rosetta Stone sucks. Maybe it's better after you learn the Kana... I haven't went back to it...

Stanford University Press has made some great textbooks on the subject. They're highly technical and go really in-depth, as a lot of the language is strongly influenced by Japanese culture itself. In-groups vs out-groups, keigo, honne/tatemae, on/giri and the like.

But for just learning the language the Genki textbooks are wonderful and very friendly!

If you are going to learn a language, it's gotta be academically, sorry.
For the kana there was an old free pc game called slime forest. Might want to try that.

i only know some kanji trainers and they are all in plain japanese.

a really good learning program with lots of speech samples (2gbit) and kana/kanji trainers would AWESOME!

theres a homebrew that suppose to supplment as a japanese english dictioanry with a sort of quiz function it's called Project JDS.

I hope there is one too... there were only stuff that hardly has any use... because it is like teaching how to write japanese to a person that is already fluent in japanese...

Those japanese learning for the japanese people... doesn't just seem quite right

They even got an english learning thing!

We need a japanese teaching program for the DS. (thats of course for American/Korean people
