Happy Death Day
Because why not follow up a time-travel slasher movie with a time-loop slasher movie? This was another one that caught my attention from the horror collection Netflix showed me for whatever reason. Quite enjoyed it tbh, I seem to have a soft spot for dumb time-loop movies.

It was funny that Israel Broussard's character started talking about Tom Hanks at the end of the movie, because I actually looked him up while I was watching to see if he was a Hanks offspring, he's got the look.

So there's a sequel I'll check out too, and a threequel is up and coming. Will see how that goes.

Followed it straight up yesterday with Happy Death Day 2u, I guess that worked out because the movie followed straight on from the first one too.
This one was similarly ridiculous but enjoyable. Will await the new one.

Just watched 28 Days Later, am rewatching the old ones for obvious reasons. This is still a classic, and the girl Hannah's attempt at a London accent (apparently, I had to hit up the googles to find out what she was even trying for) is still classically bad. Honestly I just feel bad that Jim never got his burger.

Matchstick Men - Underrated Ridley Scott movie starring Nic Cage. Good comedy with some thriller vibes and a pretty rich soundtrack and score that sounded very vintage. Great little cast with strong performances from Cage, Alison Lohman, and Sam Rockwell. A very breezy 2 hour movie with a twist that might be too obvious. The ending's also probably too positive and felt like a quick wrap-up, but it's just a fun movie that definitely represented the early 2000s.

28 Weeks Later
Different vibe from the first one, still decent, mostly likeable characters (apart from the dead). Young Poots (that should be her rap name) was good, even the boy was decent, big step up from the kid in the first one.

Materialists - Nice follow-up to Past Lives with Celine Song writing and directing another romantic drama. A solid cast, with Dakota Johnson being decent, which was surprising to me. The 2 male leads, Pedro Pascal and Chris Evans were also enjoyable. The narrative was fascinating and succeeds in subverting expectations for those who think it's a romcom and doing things differently, but the outcome is still predictable. Better explained, definitely earned, realistic, but still predictable. It doesn't hit me like Past Lives did, that movie is a lot more emotionally resonant and kind of magical. Regardless, I enjoyed Materialists. I think I'll like it more on a rewatch now that I know how things play out and would embrace it more.

16 Blocks (2006) - Good PG-13 Bruce Willis movie.

Some action, some drama. It's not as intense as his other works, like Die Hard, but it's a fun watch.

If you're a fan of Bruce Willis' work, you'll likely have a nice time with this one.

Fantastic Four (2005) - I watched the extended version, which had more non-action scenes that fleshed things out more, like Johnny's celebrity-embracing arc, and Ben's relationship with Alicia. I heard it was better and offers more character development. That was a double-edged sword because it just extended the biggest issue of the movie, the lack of superhero action! This isn't much of a superhero, it's more of a goofy movie where people gain superpowers and deal with it in their own ways. There's very little heroism. The Brooklyn Bridge scene was supposed to be the first big hero scene but that whole mess was caused by them anyway, specifically Ben Grimm. Dr. Doom's whole schtick was more him being a hater rather than a supervillain and it was a misguided vendetta played out in public. Some of the non-action scenes are funny, but it's mostly a drag. The pervy treatment of Jessica Alba is kind of gross and aged horrifically, and it's not much better that her acting was so weak. Ioan Gruffudd was okay, Michael Chiklis was pretty good. The Thing didn't look entirely comic book accurate, but it was practical! The stuff with Debbie was also gross and unflattering. Having the actress step out at night in negligee and then immediately get scared away from the sight of her longtime lover Ben is awful. Then in her 2nd scene, she puts her engagement ring onto the ground and leaves. That's awful, I know it makes Ben sympathetic, but it's still terrible writing. The extended version made Kerry Washington more significant, which was a good thing. RIP to Julian McMahon, he does well, but the writing for Dr. Doom is poor. Truly, the best part about the movie was Johnny Storm. Chris Evans hammed it up big time here and I enjoyed it! The extended version giving him more screen time was also a treat. The action stuff is okay, especially the third act. But what hurts those scenes and the movie in general is the CGI. Holy crap is it bad, but yet on the level of Green Lantern, which came out a few years later. That's more of an indictment on how bad Green Lantern's CGI was. Every CGI shot of Reed Richards stretching was unsettling and shitty. The Human Torch effects were decent. Sue Storm's powers looked fine though they did Jessica Alba dirty with the numerous strip scenes.

This was a movie where I'm kind of split down the middle. There's some good, some mediocre, some absolute shit. Overall, it's not a good movie, but it's not terrible. I might watch it again, I just wish there was a fanmade cut that removed the extra Sue and Reed scenes. Their relationship is more fleshed out, but it's still bland. Keep the extra Johnny and Ben Grimm scenes.

Just saw the New Fantastic Four Movie - Loved it overall, I heard everyone talking about how great the special effects were, etc.
Overall it was nice! I wish Ben would have looked a tad better in details, and it was cool overall.

The story was cheesy on why they were fighting Galactus, and I did like Shalla-Bal a lot, I didn't like the way they changed the story on how she became the female Silver Surfer vs. the Original Story.

But they have to Hollywood it to make it shorter.

The movie was a 10/10 hands down, great pacing and superb acting throughout.

I haven't seen "Kimi no Na wa" yet and I don't know what opinion I will have of it. But I saw the next movie their team made, "Tenki no Ko," and...holy fuk I hate it so much LOL. I feel like all these modern anime movies have really bad direction.

Started slow but it grew on me. I like Jodie Comer. Shows promise for some bonkers stuff in the sequel, which could be fun or annoying.

The acting is slightly better, the CGI is decent in places, and there were some nice action sequences. Johnny Storm and Ben Grimm were major highlights like they were in the first movie. I didn't dislike Jessica Alba as much I did in the first movie. There was fewer perverted scenes centered on Sue Storm. The Silver Surfer also looked cool, Laurence Fishburne's voice was perfect for the character. I was bothered by the return of Dr. Doom at first, but then I was charmed by Julian McMahon's performance while he was unmasked and his skin was restored. The movie turned out to be better than the first Fantastic Four movie, but not by much. There was still some bad CGI, Alba's performance still wasn't impressive for the most part, there was still a perverted scene where she's naked, in a PG movie! The PG rating generally watered things down, the writing was still bad, and there were baffling creative decisions. One was the flip-flopping with Dr. Doom, going unmasked and then putting the mask back on. Julian McMahon was generally good when he's not Dr. Doom. Jessica Alba's wig looks really bad and the blue eyes are too piercing and distracting. The most baffling decision was Galactus! He was basically a giant gray cloud. The third act was also a major decline. I was a little bothered from the movie, but I was forgiving, still enjoying it. Then the third act happened and I gave up on the movie. The action sequences in that were ruined by the CGI, making things so muddy. I also couldn't help but poke a lot of holes in the story. This was just another misfire. Nominally better than the first movie, but I was disappointed.

That review was a journey. For the first third, I was thinking, "maybe I should give this movie a try. Maybe it's not as bad as the critics said." After reading the second third, I was, like, "maybe I'm good," and the last third had me thinking, "ok, it's as bad as they said." If I ever have the time, maybe I should consider watching it myself.

In a way, I do miss being there in those situations.

The One (2001) - I haven't seen this movie in about 20 years, but I'm glad I did. It'll make you feel like a teenager in the 2000's again.

It's very much a product of its time. The CGI is easy to spot, and the soundtrack is so 2000's. I'm pretty sure Tony Hawk Pro Skater track is featured. It was nice to see some familiar faces in there, including Jason Statham. I'm a fan of James Morrison for his work in 24, so it was nice to see him show up here. I recommend giving the movie a watch, especially if you haven't seen it in a few decades. Turn your brain off, and enjoy the ride.

Daisies - Very interesting and engaging Czech film from 1966. It definitely had some clear and strong messages about communism, gender roles, and the patriarchy. It conveys these messages through satire and bizarre imagery. Very bold filmmaking choices, including crazy edits, flipping through various colors, outrageous scenes with specific choreography, and starring two women who were totally down for what the director had in mind. It's the kind of movie that I'm sure is studied in film school. It's a true expression of freedom and rebellion. It's also short! Only 76 minutes, so it certainly doesn't overstay its welcome. I certainly enjoyed it, but I think I'll like it even more on repeat viewing. It's a very provocative film, one to have intellectual discussions over.

Nightcrawler - I first watched this movie 10 years ago and was eager to revisit it. It holds up big time. I was so tense and anxious at many parts in the movie, while also falling in love with the cinematography and being absolutely captivated by Jake Gyllenhaal's performance. This is the best Jake Gyllenhaal performance in my opinion, his performance is so amazing that at times, I forgot about how amazingly photographed the movie was and how the whole vibe of the movie is sleazy, lurid, yet intoxicating. A very small cast, but great performances from a young Riz Ahmed, another sleazy guy played perfectly by Bill Paxton, and a very sexy Rene Russo. It really isn't often that a movie depicts a sexy cougar and does so unlike many other movies. I could gush about this movie for a long time. I think I love it even more the 2nd time. It also works as a spiritual successor to Collateral inasmuch that it's an LA movie that showcases how great filming on digital can be. Over 10 years later, the visuals still hold up. The mix of digital and film is absolutely seamless. Very shocking and disturbing images, it's lowkey gory and violent. Yeah, I absolutely love this movie. An easy 10/10.

War of the Worlds (2025) - This dropped a few days ago on Prime and was lambasted. It got a rare 0% on Rotten Tomatoes, 3,2/10 on IMDB, and a 1.4/5 on Letterboxd. I wanted to see how bad it was. Oh boy, it was bad. I'm talking Megalopolis bad. I'm struggling to determine whether this is worse than Megalopolis. At least that movie has a modicum of filmmaking, this movie has none of that. However, I laughed so much harder at this than I did Megalopolis and it's significantly shorter at only 90 minutes. It gives Megalopolis a run for its money, that I'll say for sure, which is a serious indicator of its quality. Dated and abysmal CGI, insufferable storytelling with a hackneyed anti-spying message, some of the worst acting you'll see in modern movies is in this. Ice Cube is wildly miscast as a desk jockey for the DHS. Veteran actors Eva Longoria and Clark Gregg phoned it in, just collecting a SAG scale check, no way they were paid above scale with this low budget nonsense. It's a screenlife movie like Unfriended, and that format doesn't work in my opinion. It's not a creative way of filmmaking, this movie makes it seem like the laziest form of it. There's no proper directing or cinematography, it's just people talking to screens and hardly ever sharing the screen physically. Ice Cube doesn't share the screen with anybody until the end of the movie, and even that was through a photo that appeared be Photoshopped or generated by AI. The movie was shot in 2020, it's a COVID movie that somehow took about 5 years to put out on Amazon Prime.

Speaking of Amazon Prime, this movie is full-blown Amazon propaganda. The third act especially is just them going balls deep with the Amazon love. Amazon saved the fucking world from aliens! One of the main characters is an Amazaon delivery driver, which was already too much Amazon-shilling. But then this guy got so involved in the third act, becoming one of the heroes, using a Prime Air drone and suggesting to pay a stranger for help with a $1000 Amazon Gift card. This is easily the worst movie of 2025, I think it might go down as the worst movie of the decade! It's one of the worst movies of the 21st Century, if not the worst. Everyone who was involved with this movie should be ashamed of themselves.
