So, I know the 3DS is region free within PAL/NTSC/JAPAN DS games, but could NTSC play Korean ds games?

Also, I heard some DSi *forgetword* are region locked. Is there a way to tell?

Thank you!

*sighs*

It's EUR, JAP and USA (I suppose you could also count KOR and CHIN (iQue), but here compatibility varies). The 3DS is not a home console, it's not connected to a TV, so it's neither PAL nor NTSC...

:/
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Virtual_Console_games_for_Nintendo_3DS_(PAL_region)
" Nintendo handhelds are region-free, along with most other historical systems (Neo Geo Pocket, Sega Game Gear, etc.), except partially for the Nintendo DSi and fully for the Nintendo 3DS which features region locking for the DSi and 3DS specific software respectively (for example, DSiWare games and apps)."-PAL wikipedia article

Close enough.

*sighs again* It says PAL region because it's the region of the world where television works according to the PAL standard. The DSi/3DS is not PAL. Or NTSC. You missed the very first sentences in the articles - PAL and NTSC are television standards.

PAL, short for Phase Alternating Line, is an analogue television colour encoding system used in broadcast television systems in many countries. Other common analogue television systems are NTSC and SECAM. This page primarily discusses the PAL colour encoding system. The articles on broadcast television systems and analogue television further describe frame rates, image resolution and audio modulation. For discussion of the 625-line / 50 field (25 frame) per second television standard, see 576i.

NTSC, named for the National Television System Committee, is the analog television system that is used in most of North America, parts of South America (except Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, and French Guiana), Myanmar, South Korea, Taiwan, Japan, the Philippines, and some Pacific island nations and territories.

The region locking on the DSi/3DS is in no way related to the television standard in given regions, therefore we opt for EUR, USA, JAP, KOR and iQue (for iQue releases only, meaning China) instead.

I'm not even being di*kish here, so don't treat it as offense, but the terms "NTSC" and "PAL" are ambiguous when it comes to handhelds, really. That, and they're factually not NTSC, PAL or anything else. I will stand corrected the day I see a sticker on a Nintendo handheld designating whether it's PAL or NTSC (which MAY happen provided the handheld will have a TV-OUT, but I digress).

Actually, I swear to god, I posted this explaination at least 5 times throughout my stay here, and I do frequent other forums where people also don't quite get it. The fact that a product is sold in an NTSC or PAL region doesn't make it PAL or NTSC... but I digress.

Believe me, man, I know. I feel your pain, too. I think you were there the last time this argument was brought up in a topic I was in and I ended up getting so pissed at how thick headed some of those people were that I left the topic.

You know, it's only the little things like that that bother me so much. It's weird.

Korean games should play perfectly fine on any DS-Compatible system. The iQue DS games on the other hand will not, as there are some minor hardware and firmware differences between the DS and the iQue. The only way to boot an iQue game on a normal DS is to do it via a flashcart, as some System Menus contain the information that's missing in the standard DS (namely, Chinese fonts and some random stuff related to them).

Here's what you're doing now.
1 - Read some of the post.
2 - Get offended that somebody's correcting you.
3 - Skip the rest of the post.

Here's what you should do instead.
1 - Read the whole post.
2 - There is no 2, do 1 and you're done.

You asked about region compatibility and somebody said the DS isn't locked, and you questioned the whole NTSC/PAL thing, so Foxi posted that you will NOT run into NTCS and PAL incompatibilities because they don't come into play in handheld systems.

He was answering your second concern.

To be fair, I was a little bit nasty and I'm sorry about that - bad hair day, I suppose. I just see this mistake ever so often and feel the need to correct it - the more often I see it, the more upset I get. :P I do apologize if I offended you, Isle41.

No worries, was not offended in the least, I apologize if I sounded harsh (which according to Rydian at least, I did).
Thanks for the help Foxi and others!
