Gateway would be the better option over sky3ds if the firmware is <=9.2. CFW is of course the way to go though, and pretty much every game is in CIA format on that one iso site.

Okay so I bought a n3DS from ebay and I wonder if I need to buy anything additional so I can install CFW and load games on my brand new n3ds.

I already have on hand:
32gb microsd
1tb of 3ds games

Do I need a gateway, sky3ds or cubic ninja?
Couldn't I just install cubic ninja on a sky3ds?
lol I don't know that bragging about that on a public forum is a good idea.

Anyhow, did you find out what firmware is installed on them before purchasing?

Because, to me (based on the seller's description) it looks like it'll be running the almost useless, browserless 8.1J
cias and 3dss
If it indeed comes with 8.1J the only real choice available to you is Gateway, where you can use all of the pirated games you've amassed thus far.

Edit: If you go the Gateway route, you're going to have to track down a Japanese copy of either Cubic Ninja (preferably) or Zelda Ocarina of Time. Both were difficult and expensive to acquire last I checked.

8.1J is incompatible with nearly every other option available, for now.

The other option is update to the latest system software and use the (increasingly useless) sky3DS, which only works with .3ds files.

I thought you could load cubic ninja on sky3ds however... I want to have full control on my n3ds, while my sister can still play games on her updated o3ds...

True. So if you're pretty flush for cash, you could buy both a Gateway and a Sky3DS.

Honestly though, if you have so much money, why not just buy an exploitable new3DS in the first place? Then you would need neither.

Stealing is wrong.

you can do cubic ninja on a sky3ds to get into the system, assuming you can get a cubic ninja payload for your OS version which seems to be an uncommon one.

"Stealing is wrong" Where did you get that I steal?

I was going to buy both a gateway and a sky3ds for the initial cfw installation then give the sky3ds to my sisters so they can play games.

1TB of 3ds games in your first post is generally a strong indicator that you downloaded a ton of games you didn't pay for (that's about $15k worth of games at an average of 2GB and $30 each accounting for 80% of the entire 3ds library.

I was just jabbing at your for bragging about it. It's poor form. This is a forum of sophisticated criminals cloaked in "homebrew". :D

and making your little sisters into criminals.. That's just low hahahahaha! It's all good, I accepted that I was a bad person a long time ago so I'm not judging you. Just giving you a hard time like I said.

Sorry I didn't mean to take the thread off track.

JP white n3ds?
then it should be v8.1 firmware no doubt....
GW: welcome!!!! Julialy!

only option for u is gw..... cfw need ninjhax or whatever *hax that can load smea's homebrew loader.
u can't do that on 8.1.
anyway, is a exploitable console, so lucky you:lol:

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

Okay, so I was thinking, I already have a copy of Smash Bros (JP). Could I use the game to update to 9.2 and then use smashbroshax for an exploit? Then I don't need to get gateway/sky3ds from shady sites.
no.... all these *hax need at least 9.0 firmware(the real 9.0 or up firmware, not cartridge updated one)

My n3DS arrived. It's 8.1.0-J.
I called it! :yaynds:

As I indicated earlier, if you're on 8.1J your only option is Gateway, and one of the two exploitable games (buying a sky3DS will cover that part).

All
other options require you to be on 9.0 plus, and to have the internet browser installed. 8.1J didn't ship with the internet browser.

So while updating with Smash will put you on 9.2, you still won't have a browser, which excludes you from all options aside from gateway.

What makes you think Smash Bros (JP) comes with update 9.2..?
As far as i know it comes with update 8.1.0.

Nope, you can't update your sysnand with gateway (except on 2.2,but this version only work on 4.X), it will brick your console. There is currently no way to update a 8.1J n3ds to 9.0-9.2.

yall im torn... ive been hacking away at tales of phantasia GBA (the USA version) and have so many documents of reverse engineering i've done
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I just found out that the EU version is better in literally every way, better sound quality, better lighting, and there's even a patch someone made to make the text look nicer
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
Do I restart now using what i've learned on the EU version since it's a better overall experience? or do I continue with the US version since that is what ive been using, and if someone decides to play my hack, it would most likely be that version?
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
@TwoSpikedHands, I'll preface this with the fact that I know nothing about the game, but, I think it depends on what your goals are. Are you trying to make a definitive version of the game? You may want to refocus your efforts on the EU version then. Or, are you trying to make a better US version? In which case, the only way to make a better US version is to keep on plugging away at that one ;)
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
I'm not familiar with the technicalities of the differences between the two versions, but I'm wondering if at least some of those differences are things that you could port over to the US version in your patch without having to include copyrighted assets from the EU version
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
@Sicklyboy I am wanting to fully change the game and bend it to my will lol. I would like to eventually have the ability to add more characters, enemies, even have a completely different story if i wanted. I already have the ability to change the tilemaps in the US version, so I can basically make my own map and warp to it in game - so I'm pretty far into it!
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I really would like to make a hack that I would enjoy playing, and maybe other people would too. swapping to the EU version would also mean my US friends could not legally play it
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I am definitely considering porting over some of the EU features without using the actual ROM itself, tbh that would probably be the best way to go about it... but i'm sad that the voice acting is so.... not good on the US version. May not be a way around that though
