I really want to play this game but never got the chance to actually download it to my DSi when it did come out. Is there like a .nds file that I need to use or can you just not emulate DSi ware games.

Use Twilight Menu.
The games should be available as .nds files. Play them from that, in the "dsiware" folder.
dude it's stupidly easy and basically risk free as long as you go to dsi.cfw.guide instead of a sketchy video walkthrough and follow the directionsOh damn. I really don't want to hack my DSi.
As already mentioned: installing unlaunch/HiyaCFW/TWiLight Menu++ only takes some minutes and is very easy. (I understand not wanting to modify a specific console – I keep some consoles on stock firmware as well. But honestly: A DSi without TWiLight Menu++ is more or less a DS-Lite with a useless camera but without GBA slot)Oh damn. I really don't want to hack my DSi.
yeah, I can see keeping specific consoles on stock firmware. but there’s two problems with that view.As already mentioned: installing unlaunch/HiyaCFW/TWiLight Menu++ only takes some minutes and is very easy. If you insist on not modifying your console for whatever reason: No$gba should be able to emulate Four Swords.
Good luck and have fun!
I don't want to hack my DSi because I feel like I am tampering with the memories that I had with it. I would gladly hack any console, just not my DSi.yeah, I can see keeping specific consoles on stock firmware. but there’s two problems with that view.
1) with Unlaunch and TWLmenu you can still access the normal home menu
2) it’s the freaking DSi. the only system I keep on stock firmware that I would have the right to hack (as in it’s mine and not a family system) is my Switch. and that’s because Switch hacking is real freaking risky right now.
Understandable.I don't want to hack my DSi because I feel like I am tampering with the memories that I had with it. I would gladly hack any console, just not my DSi.
yeah you can find a 2ds for like 40 bucks off ebay and a dsi for maybe tenUnderstandable.
Then give No$gba a try. Most DSiWare emulation seems to work fine (some don't start at all and the microphone is not yet emulated in DSi mode – only in DS mode).

Or if it is just the one device that is connected with your memories: DSi consoles are pretty cheap. Get another one for installing unlaunch/TWilight Menu++.
----
Last alternative: Get a 2|3DS for installing CFW. The 3DS family offers way more than a DSi (though the different resolution make DS(i) games blurry when scaled – or small in pixel perfect mode).
