As far as I can see, there are plenty of disadvantages to using a WBFS drive over FAT32, so why do some guides still tell people to use it?

The 2MB WBFS Simple GUI copies any iso onto a FAT32 drive.. no managers required, can put roms, mp3s on same drive and is readable on every device known to man.

Why cause unnecessary problems with WBFS then?

Most guides switched to FAT32 and/or NTFS already, nobody actually recommends that filesystem anymore.

I recently acquired a taste for FAT32 - sure, NTFS allows non-split game transfers if the image exceeds 4 gigabytes... but...

DIOS MIOS.

That is all.

stick with ntfs its better and you can also stick movies and music on the drive to to use with wiimc thats what i do
Of course then you can't use NEEK, DIOS-MIOS, or put any apps on it. You can play movies fine with FAT32. Unless you have blueray rips, which can't play on the Wii, nothing is going to be over 4GB.

Currently FAT32 has the highest compatibility for the Wii.

I divide my HDD into 2 partition 1st active is Fat32 for nands,roms,apps... second is NTFS for wii games and large files everything works as expected.
wbfs format for HDD is pure crap with no advantages whatsoever (unless you're using really old loader that require this format to function)

I think most people/guides telling to use wbfs partitions are simply not up to date.

And about those who still use it (for their own reasons or ignorance)
Before DM there wasn't that much inventive to actually switch FS.
As long as you take care to avoid the wbfs delete bug and the windows format nag screen you should be good.
Not everyone wants to store much besides wii backups on a wii and things like roms fit on sd fine too.

I use fat32. I can't really think of any real disadvantages to having to split the isos, and the other advantages to fat32 (namely, DM2.0) make it worthwhile to me.

The only advantage I know for WBFS is being able to use uloader for Rock Band DLC, that's it..
...that can be done with a FAT32-partition as well (though not with uloader).

I remember @Wiimm once mentioning a genuine advantage over FAT32. I can't remember which one exactly (access time or something) but nothing mindblowing. FAT32 still had the major trump cards (and that was before Dios Mios), so I doubt anyone's going to switch back.

As mentioned before: hacking guides were made by people who don't keep up with the progress. Or have a policy of "if it works, why change things?".

It "helps" in avoiding fragmentation in the sense that it has larger clusters, but that alone doesn't help you entirely avoid fragmentation - it just makes it worse when fragmentation does occur.

Technically, larger clusters (WBFS) means that their number is smaller, thus there is a smaller risk of them getting fragmented. Practically, you get massive file chunks and after deleting a few files, you simply cannot fit those chunks in the holes left by other files. You have free space, technically, but you cannot use it. Moreover, you waste space.

The smaller the cluster size the bigger the chance that you will be able to fill up the gaps and avoid wasting disk space, but then, you have a reversed situation.

This is why there are default, recommended values - recommended by IT specialists who were in the field long before many of us were born.

Moreover, WBFS is not defragmentable via standard means as it is not visible for the OS as valid - the only thing at your disposal are custom tools with debatable benefits.

In the (likely) event of disk failure, you may as well forget about the data unless you feel like digging for it yourself manually - have fun digging in RAW. With FAT32 and NTFS, you can use standard data recovery software, as well as scanning software and all sorts of defragmenters - the sky is the limit.

The partitions are also not accessible to anything other than USB Loaders - this means no media files, no Gamecube backups, no homebrew, no nothing.

WBFS was a necessary evil - it was a temporary measure until better solutions surface when the corresponding libraries are ported and tested. They have been, which is why WBFS is no longer in development by its original creators, however *some* people cling to it as if it was their saviour.

I am still unsure whether the "benefit" of using WBFS, which would be higher read speeds, is even worth it, but that will be benchmarked soon enough to dispel any further confusion.

As of today, GBATemp's and any reputable coder/modder's stance is that it's obsolete.

Sorry for being lazy but I currently have a 1tb hardrive with 3 partitions: 1. WBFS - Wii games 2. NTFS - Laptop Backup 3. FAT32 - Homebrew stuff

Is there a reason I should convert them all to FAT 32 or NTFS and is there any guide to do so?

Thanks :)

I'd recommend all FAT32, as it covers everything (except 4GB+ files, so no blueray movies), but if you don't want to format anything, use http://gbatemp.net/topic/291320-wbfs2fatpy/ to convert your WBFS partition to FAT32. It will only take a few seconds. WBFS partitions tend to get corrupted, and then you can't recover any files from it.

Only convert your wbfs to FAT32, but keep your Laptop backup partition to NTFS to store big files on it.

Having the first partition as FAT32 will allow you to launch GameCube backups with DIOS MIOS.

From what I understood, there is no need to worry about fragmentation..
