Gaming Is Pokemon really fun, or just compulsive?

Personally, I have to agree with him. The full-3D art-style in the home console entries looks much worse than the portable entries.
This lacks much of the charm that this has,
But that's just me.
To me, it's everyday laziness, plain and simple - I see a huge difference between developing a 3D game for a powerful home console and a 3D game for the limited DS - why do you thing Golden Sun took almost the entirety of the DS's lifetime to develop, or Metroid Prime: Hunters which was supposed to be a launch title got released much, much later? Re-using the engine, improving upon it and adding new maps/sprites is infinitely easier, ESPECIALLY when you know it's going to sell.

Nintendo has a habit of polishing their games, I'll give them that. They may be lazy when it comes to developing from scratch, but they do take their time with the petty details. If they were to develop a fully 3D mainstream Pokemon game (meaning "not Rumble" or anything of the sort) on such limiting hardware, it would take them forever and a few days. The 3DS is their golden chance to shine as it simply has higher specs and will allow for it without having to resort to cheap tricks.

So yes, "it's just you", I, for one, don't share your opinion.

I don't mind the graphics or the 2D sprites. I find it very charming, in fact.

My complaint is that the game, at heart, is just compulsive. Collecting is such a big part of the game. Sure, you can beat it without having caught the large majority of Pokemon, but most of us play it to collect the Pokemon, to complete the Pokedex. There's simply no way to do that without an enormously huge amount of mindless grinding.

A little grinding is okay, but if your target isn't just to beat the 8 gyms, you are in for hours and hours and hours of blindly rifling through the menus.

I love collecting games, personally. And there is a degree of compulsion in all collecting games. But Pokemon seems like it's nothing but compulsion, with very little "fun" factor.

Pokemon is REALLY fun!!! It has gone through many Generations, and I find it addicting. However, I HATE the slow exp. growth and spending 30 MINUTES catching Kyurem. TO catch legendary pokemon, you have to play the pokeball lottery. I spent 25 minutes catching Heatran...

catching legendary pokemon the most fun.

My only interest in the franchise is replaying the 1st and 2nd gen games for nostalgia awesomeness, and maybe trying out the third gen games some time. Beyond that... meh.

To be honest, a lot of games in the sort of turn based RPG genre feel the same. I used to be a fan of games like FF and DQ, but the more I played them, the more I got bored. Most games like this come down to just walking from town to town, killing a boss, grinding, and moving through dungeons, grinding some more, killing some more bosses. The storylines are never exactly masterpieces either.

I'm still playing Pokemon white 2 obsessively, so, erm. I'm going with the compulsive - "this is something to do with my time when I'm too tired to do anything else" line of thought.

I only like the old Pokemon for whatever reason.

Recently I am replaying Emerald on my phone... I lost interest though after Diamond. I tried to play Black/White for a bit but got bored already after first Gym :/

^ That and the remakes with other nostalgia-inducing elements. Like the Pokemon following you in HGSS.

Always taunting about how you miss those good ol' days.

Always tempting you to go back for one more game.

:P
Gold and Silver were my favorites. When I saw the Pokemon following the player, I had to at least try the game. Damn nostalgia.

But that's just me.

Its not just you mate. I agree

not to mention that 2D sprite based games age MUCH better than 3D polygon based games.

for example, i think (and i'm not the only one) that NES and SNES games have aged immensely better than N64 or PS1 games,
and they're older.
on the other hand, i like better how GBA (and even GBC) games have aged vs N64/PS1 games, and they are newer,
so yeah.

The game itself never attempted to hide the fact that it is mainly about compulsion.
"Gotta catch em all!"
I only play it to get pokemon for other ppl who actually like the game.
I'll admit the story for b/w 1 and 2 was more amusing than previous games. Still nothing epic though.

Well, i guess it really isn't much fun just battling over and over, but then that's probably why they put in all the small things like pokemon contests and so! Maybe try out one of the 3D fun ones, especially Pokemon Colosseum on N64!

sure if you have old games you can play- inport to newer play- inport to even newer

easy way to get lots of pokemon that arent easy to get like with events

I do. And everyone else I know to play Pokemon, would not like it if sprites were replaced by 3d polygons.

The monsters themselves are designed for 2d, for an animation-like look.

If Pokemon started off as 3D, they'd look completely different. Instead of clear one-colored parts with interesting patterns.. they would have more realistic details like furr and scales instead. Whereas adding such to the already existing pokemon to try and make a nice 3D out of it would look a mess on most of the creatures.

And GAAAWD the 3D battles on consoles are so boring and... life-less. They feel so forced and not awesome at all.

Ill just say that 3D is not exclusively and improvement or "the next step". Both have their own pros. I prefer quality sprites over polygons anyday.

They can keep experimenting with Pokemon in 3D with spin-offs (like the new mystery dungeon for 3DS), and if they ever get something that works great out of it...but until then, Im happy they agree with me and stick to sprites.

What you said about pokemon battles being bland in general is a good point though. Id love for them to improve on the battle-backgrounds more than just making it fancy colors.

On the main Pokemon series of games, they should leave it as 2D animations, if you want a Pokemon game with 3D animations you should play the other Pokemon games like Pokemon Colosseum.

as for improving battles themselves,
i'd like to see them be made more interactive,
and i dont mean quick time events,
i mean things like button press action moves - like Paper Mario, or Mario & Luigi.
i'd love to see that.

actually, as a kid playing RBY,
i would naturally press the buttons at the right time (attacking, defending, catching pokemon) thinking it would affect the gameplay
lol
